The original iMac was cool, I blog with a G3 CRT. I use both OSX and OS9 to play ALL the Retro games. I mean USB and firewire without any driver issues for a 1998 computer. Even the keyboard on the ancient iMacs have a couple extra USB ports, easily accessed for popping in a USB flash drive.![]()
However, I don't get the newer i systems though. Overpriced, no keyboard built in and an operating system of a cell phone.![]()
iMac G3 - All the great stuff, easily accessed thru a side panel, not buried in the back.

eBay? Shipping might cost more than the computer though. You could try a auctions at colleges or school districts, maybe. They sold them by the pallet at VT auctions at one point.Wow, I remember these. I totally want to find one now. Then you just have to make sure the common failure point of the flyback transformer is fine, and ensure that anything you need to run on it works on 10.3 or 10.4, depending on model.

I always remember the G3 imacs being slow as hell. But YMMV of course.
I picked up a couple dual processor G4s a while back for some Mac gaming. Got 10.4 and Morphos on one with an ATI 8500, and OS 9 on the other with a Geforce 2mx. These are still really snappy versatile computers.

Too heavy to ship at a reasonable price. Keep hitting local Swap Meets and Retro store, you might get lucky! The slot loading ones have faster chips.
The main slowdown I have with my iMac CRT is videos and any heavy scripted site. But for blogging or just googling, a great no spyware issues Retro Computer. Though not very common, the Flyback Transformer can fail, a slow pink screen of death. Should it fail, there is a VGA plug in the back to hookup to another monitor.
One thing to watch out for is updating the Firmware BEFORE installing OSX. The newest OSX that works on a G3 is 10.4. Set up as a duel boot with OS9 to play all the older Mac games.

I can imagine Apple quietly updating the TV to include streaming games from your iPad. It's already possible to run SNES emulators on your iPad and use your wirelessly connected iPhone and iPod touch as a controller. It should be fairly easy to implement a cross-platform system here.
Anyway, what I'm saying is Apple already have everything needed to compete with current-gen consoles (not aggressively though) without putting any actual effort into it. All they have to do now is tie loose ends together.

Angry Birds on the new Apple console will definitely overtake Nintendo franchises for sure.

My first and only Mac was the Mac SE that I bought in 87 for $2100isiolia wrote:Keep in mind I bought my first Mac in '96, and had friends whose families only had them through pretty much the entire 90s.

I remember that I got the 50% student discount so the street price was around $4K.
Crazy.

My Apple IIc around 1986 cost about $2000. I can still visualize the price stickers on the boxes. It was $800 for the color monitor, $1100 for the computer, and $100 for the mouse.
In 1991, new Pentium systems were over $3000. Most people I knew, plus my school classes, had a 386 at the time.

Yeah, I know those prices were the norm but it's still a shocker to me with today's prices. I remember in 96 that I would budget $5K per PC for each person in my group. Granted, these were higher-end PCs (PII dual processors), 256MB ram, etc.Zing wrote: In 1991, new Pentium systems were over $3000. Most people I knew, plus my school classes, had a 386 at the time.
