it came across as "gospel truth", sorry if I misinterpreted.
Which game is superior on another platform?
Sonic Generations is better on PC (better resolution, graphics, etc.). I like it - an excellent game, but I don't know that I think it is one of the best on the PS3.
An so what if a game only lasts an hour if it's great? If you mean Flower, you're getting enough enjoyment for its asking price.
I wasn't suggesting otherwise. Flower would be on my list of top 10 PSN games, I'd bet.
I listed both Batman games because they are both great and you actually appreciate Arkham City a bit more if you've played Arkham Asylum, but both games stand on their own.
I like Batman, I like beat em ups, and I like third person action games with stealth elements. I do not like the Arkham games, though it is hard for me to put my finger on why exactly right now.
I played a LOT of platformers games. I'm quite confident I've played more than you
You might be surprised, though I pretty much limit my platforming to 2D games unless the game has "Galaxy" in the title...
and LBP is easily among the worst I've ever had the displeasure of playing. Calling the controls floaty is a nicer way of saying that they're bad. The level design only make this more apparent, as it is NOT conducive to it at all.
Wow - among the WORST you've played? That's crazy talk. Let's face it - there's not a lot of 2D or 2.5D pure platformers on consoles either this gen or last. I've played downloadable titles like Super Meat Boy, Vvvvvv, Braid, Limbo, Sonic Episode 1, etc. and I'm pretty confident that LBP is the best retail or downloadable release that isn't named Sonic Generations or is a Mario/Wario/Kirby title for the Wii. I'd love to know what recent 2D pure platformers (in the past 10 years or so) you think are better (especially on the PS3). I have had no issue with the controls in the LBP games at all, and the levels are creative, large, quirky, and (at times) challenging. I don't understand how you can like platformers and not like LBP at all. The gameplay is excellent.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions guys.

I have reserved the console at my local store for pickup tomorrow. Hopefully I should get some cool games, thanks for all the suggestions.

Also, reserved the first Little Big Planet, purely because the girlfriend wants a cutesy, co-op game we can play together. Have played it before, but have to be honest, I can kind of see Gamerforlife's point (although not to his extremes). From what I played, I found it quite overrated. Who knows though, I could change my mind when I play it a bit more.

I think Gamerforlife is in a really small minority. Most who play LBP seem to fall in love with it in the first hour, and those floaty controls become comfortable and make sense in the world your immersed in.

Bit stumped by all the different models and prices though. Anything I need to know? Any help?

Second hand or new? Slim or normal (old?) model? How large is advisable for hard drive space? Are there any manufacturing problems I should know of? Anything that is going to be really important to know, or consider, before buying a model?

Also, as a huge retro fan, what are some games you can recommend? I really aren't up to date to with the modern generation, but I really want to pick up Sonic Generations, Catherine and possibly the Metal Gear Solid HD collection?
I suggest you buy a newer slim model because by now the older models are starting to age and probably wont last much longer.

I think 160g model will be fine for you, considering this is your first jump into this generation. Also many of those games available on the PSN store can be bought cheaper at local used gamestores.

As for classic games you can find them either on the psn store as digitial downloads or compilation ps3 game disks. Like i said before its best to search out some those games at local gamestore.

Random info
-PS3 Slim does not play PS2 games, but can play PS1 games
-PS3 is alot lighter than the fat
-PS3 Slim have actual buttons for eject & power unlike the fat
PSN- jacktsang05
WiiU- jacktsang05

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls should be on your list. There's a PS3 RPG thread around here somewhere...

I would stay away from a lot of the popular games like Uncharted, which are pretty but offer very little in the way of gameplay depth. Some of the driving games rock though. I liked SplitSecond and Dirt 3.

And this is another problem I'm having. By Googling "top Ps3 games" etc, the lists are coming up with loads of FPSs and games like Uncharted etc, that no one here has mentioned. Friends have told me to get the Mass Effect series too? Are these games just over-hyped shallow games? Or are they really as amazing as people say?
