Superplay?
While browsing the shmups forum I noticed someone had posted a link to their videos.
My buddy let me borrow his PS2 for the month so no more MAME for me. I'm really enjoying figuring out this game as I go along. I know I should read/watch up to find the hidden gold guys and watch the best ways to tech bonus but that's not usually how i roll. i'm old skool. one credit at a time. clawing my way through the game. i know it's not the "best" way to play but i'm not breaking any records, just having a good time.
so far i can usually come out of stage 1 with between 120-130k
as for tech bonuses... besides the "star pattern" boss that i've pretty much got down (move left forward, cut right to center, BOOM) i've been bombing to clear the screen of bullets right before the boss shows it's core and then quickly hitting it with the dragon. a bit of a wuss move, i know, but it does the trick
Nice score, hashiriya1! that's 1-4 Boss? just curious if in that run you hit the 4 gold guys and got the three tech bonuses? because so far i've only been able to consistently unlock the stage 1 gold guy but i've been pretty good about tech bonuses

I barely make it to the 1-4 boss. I do get all of the gold coin fountains and tech bonuses (3 bosses). As you already know, once you get to 1-4 the difficulty is outrageous. Because the first four levels are random, it's hard to learn the bullet patterns of all of the enemies of all the levels once they're at a 1-4 level. Hopefully I'll get there.
Look at my Backloggery -- all the scores I see here and on the Shmups! forum all have Quaid as the character. He really didn't impress me as much as Rob has. What is it with Quaid?

I started with Rob, but he is too slow. I tried Sonia, but her dragon takes too long to get back to her. I am gonna try messing around with Ian to see if his speed results in higher scores. Quaid is just a well-rounded character, IMO.
Yeah I agree, after testing them all, I like Quaid's speed, and the speed of his dragon.
Sadly, my computer is slowing down so much that it doesn't even seem like I'm playing the game properly. So, until I can fix that or source a pcb, I'm out of this one. So lame.
two new scores, and one new wrinkle. I fired the game up in MAME - the ROM I have is the "Int'l version" (haven't looked for the JPN one yet), and the levels seem to always go in the same order. Also, when I hold down rapid fire the "Magic" shot will not fill up and instead will auto fire when it reaches the minimal level to kick in. It also seems a little bit easier than the PS2 version.
What MAME ROM is everyone using, and are they indeed comparable?
