Video games based on classic literature

Post by glynnahab »

I did a search with unsatisfactory results, so please don't crucify me.

I would love to play a high-quality game based on classic literature, something like the Odyssey or Huck Finn. For some reason I can't think of anything but the Alice in Wonderland games, and search engine results aren't helping much either. I'd also be interested in hearing about crappy games based on the classics, like the Tom Sawyer game for NES, just for the knowledge of their existence.

You guys got anything?

I'd throw out Jekyll & Hyde for the NES, but you said "high quality."

when you said Huck Finn I immediately thought of "Adventures of Tom Sawyer" for NES, but then kept reading and was like "Dammit!"

I'm pretty sure there was a thread on this. Oh well, Koei has some games based on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, most notably the Dynasty Warriors series.

Since a good portion of our games come from Asia...

"Journey to the west" is a popular classic novel and there are countless games and tv series that have used this book as a jumping point.

Maybe thats the last source of orignal ideas for games?

There's a ton of games based on the Chinese classic, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The most obvious are The Romance of the Three Kingdoms (duh) and Dynasty Warriors, but there are also some more niche titles like the "adult, visual novel" (or anime porn dating sim) version called "Koihime Musou ~A Heart-Throbbing, Maidenly Romance of the Three Kingdoms~" put out by MangaGamer.

I know there are a few games based on HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. The three I know of are Shadow of the Comet, Prisoner of Ice, and Call of Cthulhu.

It might not usually be considered a literary classic but since I recently started playing it, I feel like mentioning I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. A game which adapts one of science-fiction author Harlan Ellison's most intense short stories.

I would LOVE an adventure game based on The Mayor of Casterbridge where you play a scheming Michael Hitchard constantly being foiled. It would be glorious!
