Here's a local example: I like thrash, death, black, doom, folk, crust, you name it basically, and yet I still don't like a single band you've listed, because those terms are just too broad. It's not until I get into the derivative and hybrid genres that I can really even describe my musical tastes.

This isn't just sequestered to metal, either. "I like rock music" or "I like indie" are equally ridiculous statements.

I guess if you really want to push it, you could say viking metal's actually referring to stuff like later Bathory or Vintersorg or something I guess.

It's a pretty silly 'genre' in any case.

GET THEE HENCE VILLAIN!

Phew...

Viking metal doesn't just refer to metal with lyrics about vikings or Norse mythology, although that's part of the subgenre. Viking metal is a kind of extreme metal which is usually melodic and influenced by Northern European, especially Scandinavian, folk music. You'll usually hear black metal influences too since both deal with themes of isolation, cold, and violence. So, Ensiferum, Equlibrium and Slechtvalk's earlier stuff are Viking metal. Entombed isn't.

And that's exactly why it's better to just make everyone listen to music they don't want to hear :D

So it's just folk metal with a viking theme :P

It's just one of those tiny genre niches that's not really useful to anybody who doesn't already listen to it. Like goregrind or something. It's not about just the gore man it's got its own sound you gotta have them groovy riffs and pitched shifted toilet vocals.

Also nobody listens to Entombed post-Clandestine you should know that

I've always steered away form most of the folky stuff out there. Never appealed to me much.

I like so-called Viking Metal. Amon Amarth is one of my favorite bands, actually. And I don't know if 3 Inches of Blood falls into Viking Metal or not, but they're an awesome band, too. And a lot of their songs involve Vikings.

I grew up around folk music and I really enjoy it. I live in an area with lots of local history and pride. The folk stuff around here has lots of personality, and it's almost always well-written by experienced old folks who have heard every kind of music there is. I listen to Simply Folk every Sunday: http://wpr.org/simplyfolk/

I'm also mostly Scandinavian by descent so I'm interested in Viking culture too. I really like Finnish folk music although I don't have Finnish blood in me. So folk-metal, when well done, really appeals to me.

As a subgenre Viking metal has a rather indistinct style, I would agree with you there. It's got its own flavor, with an emphasis on dark emotions like bitterness and rage, rather than traditional subject matter and I think that usually comes out in how the music is written as well as the lyrics. The difference is more apparent if you listen to a lot of similar metal that doesn't deal with Viking themes, but it's probably hard to pick up on unless you listen all the time. Like you said I totally don't understand goregrind.

Here's a video

I like these guys, too. I just discovered them on the DVD I ordered, Monsters of Metal Vol. 6, which I have a post about earlier in this thread. So they're a pretty new band, for me.

Even though they sound great, I can't help but bust up when I see the guy getting down on the flute in the videos.
Yeah, I feel the same way when I watch an Apocalyptica video and see them headbanging with cellos

Here's a great song off of Eluveitie's new album. It's the only video I could find of it. There's a little part at the beginning of the vid that isn't actually part of the song, but whatever.

I think I've posted other stuff by them elsewhere in the thread. I think you're the first person besides me to show an interest in them. They're a popular band, but apparently not on this forum

What the hell, I'll post another vid or two here

This one isn't very metal, but I don't care
