There really is a fine line. I had tons of fun just playing shmups casually, and the games still shine.

Since I've started playing for score, I'd say half the time I am having way more fun than I ever did playing casually, but the other half of the time I am not having nearly as much fun, as the frustration of doing something really difficult does kick in after a few weeks being stuck on one or two things.

Once you hit the reward, its well worth it, but I still need to have some shmups that I play casually, or just for the 1cc. For me, thats what Dodonpachi is for.

I managed to get a boss tech bonus for the first time last night, but I didn't see my final score after I died later on because I decided to continue and see the rest of the levels.

This game gets completely insane, fast.

I'll post another score later. Dragon Blaze brutalizes me the further I get, but I'm finding that I enjoy that.

I feel like there's some masochism involved in enjoying bullet hell shooters.

"Hurt...me...moooore...."

yeah there are times where I'm weaving through a big blanket of pink bullets and I think "oh shit why did I just zig left that bullets gonna hit me" but I graze it and survive and my heart skips a little beat. It's kind of like loving horror movies that scare you.

This was the huge initial appeal of Cave shooters for me. Just being on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding playing a video game. I was like ..."video games can be like this, and not be fighting games?"

Before I play this again in a few, let me add that the hitbox is VERY liberal in this game. Grazing is a common occurrence

I've noticed that. Like Noise said, its a heart pounding moment, but usually when it happens to me I think, "How the hell did I survive that?".

Of course, while I'm pondering that question, I get killed by the next wave of bullets.

I absolutely HATE the desert stage if it's 1-3 or 1-4!

Anyway, managed to get a couple of plays in before I leave from work.

173,700 - 1-3 - Sonia - PS2

Finally got to spend about a half an hour with this one, so here's the first score to put up. I am not even thinking about playing for score just yet -I'll be in the "learning stages" phase for a bit still. This will be a fun month :)

Can someone compare the PS2/MAME versions to see if scoring is the same and, thus, comparable?

I'm curious to that as well. There is tons of information on how accurate the different Cave ports are, but little info is available as to Psikyo port accuracy. It always seemed to me as though they were regarded as fairly accurate ports.

The only complaint I've ever heard about the DB port is that it doesn't support keyboard controls, and the poster was clearly jesting.

Gonna try to get some time with this tonight, if my computer doesn't decide to run MAME horribly. Its always hit or miss, even though I stop all unnecessary processes, and the machine is plenty strong. Its probably the heating issue.
