why most ps3 games require an install?

Post by JC48573 »

I think I saw a video like a year ago, but I don't think I really understood it. Someone care to explain?

I'm pretty sure the main reason is that the bluray discs spin at a slower speed so having data on the hd cuts down on loading time.

IIRC, the PS3's Blu-Ray drive doesn't spin the discs all that fast. The installs are needed to prevent killer load times.

In fact, the PS3 BD drive is a 1x drive.

Yes... 1x... the same speed as a Sega CD or TurboGrafx drive.

That's a misnomer. You can't compare the *x speeds between different drives. A 1x CD-ROM is 150 KB/s. A 1x BD-ROM is 4.5 MB/s. The way the *x speeds work is the very first drive speed is defined as 1x, and future drives are integer multiples of that speed.

Basically, yeah. I know John Carmack has mentioned that specific reason for needing a HDD install for Rage on the PS3 where the 360 version didn't need one.

Though, that said, it's a 2x drive, not a 1x.
