Anyone shifted or added a genre recently?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Anyone shifted or added a genre recently?

Post by blue_veilvet »

Hi there,

I assume that many of you have a certain set of preferred genres when it comes to videogames. I'm interested if any of you had some significant changes in your choice of genres. Did you add a genre to your favorites or even shifted to a whole new set of genres altogether? Please post your experiences with this here (I hope a topic like this does not exist already).

As for me, I'm usually more into RPGs und Action Adventure, and besides the occasional platformer or action game, I was pretty strict with this. But recently I got to like 2D Shooters. This was because I got a bunch of games from a friend (including gems like Harvest Moon and Terranigma, and all he wanted for them was a Latte Macciato :D ) and tested them all right away. A few went straight to my fleamarket / ebay stack, but among the games that remained was the plain solid Solarstriker, the first 2D shooter I ever owned. I played it a few times and really grew to like it. It is very simple, yes, but the graphics are nice, you can determine everything, the tunes played are cool, and the controls are good. The spaceship behaves just the way you want it to, and it does move at a moderate speed.

And it introduced me to the great wonders of 2D shooting: Blasting everything away you see, dodging bullets like a maniac and fighting again and again against huge bosses until you memorized their attack pattern and developed a strategy to beat them.

After realizing that I had fun with this, I was quite euphoric. I thought shooters were quite commonplace, so I looked out for new games to auquire. And I was baffled: Not only was one of the reference games, R Type Delta rare und expensive, but also the best games were only available as imports. That was quite a shock for me, a European who was always too lazy to make his consoles able to play imports and therefore already missed out on some great RPGs.

Nevertheless I started to extend my game library, buying R Type Delta, Gradius G und R Type (GB). Since my game money this month is short, I'll wait for July to snatch up a few titles that usually show up on the flea market.

So, how came the change of mind? I played 2D shooters before and kind of liked the overall style of them. But the gameplay seemed to blant for me (after all, I was an RPG fan). I think this changed because I became a bit dreary of RPGs. After spending almost 80 hours to beat Persona 3 I longed for something more simple, and then Solar Striker was just the right thing for me.

Generally speaking, that's how it happened with me too. Passing interest in shmups my whole life. Bought the occasional one during PS1 days...Einhander, R-Type Delta, N2O, Thunderforce V, Raycrisis. Really got into them proper a few years ago and was obsessed with finding out about and collecting them. That's what led me to this site. Racket's site pretty much gave me everything I needed to know.

I am usually just a big action/adventure and shump fan, with FPS and RPG on the side. But right now all I am playing are Puzzle and RTS games. I guess its that lack of sleep - twitch sense is down.

I've always been a huge RPG/Strategy fan, and in the past six months or so I've been playing a ton of classic Beat 'Em Ups and Shoot 'Em Ups. Something about the simplicity and the ease of being able to just turn the system on when I get the chance is great. I'll eventually devote myself to an RPG again but for now I'm just exploring all that the Beat 'Em Up and Shoot 'Em Up genres have to offer.

I used to consider RPGs one of my favorite genres, but as I've grown up I realize I just don't have the time to sink into them anymore. Fighters I will probably always love, because I can jump into a fighter, play three matches, and cut the game off, and fewer than five minutes have passed. If I get too busy, I can always play a fighter.

Also, it's not much of a retro genre since it didn't really take off until the Saturn/PS1 days, but survival horror has been my favorite ever since I played my first one. Sure it takes a little longer, but it's still not as time consuming as an RPG.

Oh, and for PC, I still love FPSs, but I just don't care for RTSs anymore. I'll play them, but I don't really want to...

Same sort of thing happened to me. I'm usually an Action/Adventure/Platformer type of guy, Zelda/Mario/Sonic/Metroid etc. But I have recently discoverd a love for shooters. I guess it starte wih my first console, and one of my first games, a Sega Master System with Transbot, an R-Type clone. I only had the game for a couple of days before I think I lost it, I can't really remember! Anyway it disapeared from my life, and I have been looking for it ever since! Found out the name of it recently and went back to play it and loved it! Got me intrested in other games of that genre, and so my shump love started. It's strange how a lot of people "find" the shooter genre later, maybe it is a more adult genre.

I generally don't play racing games... wells besides mario kart, but I can't put down Sega Rally - Saturn lately. Its pretty cool cuz I missed this one back in the 90s... the home version at least.

Graphics are decent for the era and the gameplay is absolutely fantastic!

I've always loved racing games, platformers, fighting games, and first person shooters. Ever since I played NFL 2K for the Dreamcast for the first time a few years back, I've been playing sports games a lot, and just a few months ago I tried out Oblivion for the 360 and now I like the blend of Action Adventure/RPG.
