I think that trash-talking or otherwise demeaning the opponent to throw him off his game is uncompetitive and hurts both the community and the game, I ban it from my tournaments. This is a tangent, tough.

And I love trash-talking when I play casually with people I know.



What I really find that sad is how long it went without anyone doing anything to kick this guy out. That's the real problem here. There will always be sexist assholes, but we can choose if we are on their side.

Not that I disagree, but it's sad that this one instance is getting singled out simply because it lifts the veil of anonymity from the inherent dickishness of this behavior. I don't see anyone making a fuss over the cesspool of sexism and racism that is the internet multiplayer experience. Anyone that's every played DotA/its splinter games or Xbox Live can attest to that.

Language can be very powerful and deceptive. I think challenging people like that is definitely more in the right direction. A lot of this behavior is also part of someone's personality and how they were raised. Changing someone's personality is a very difficult thing to do and most likely won't work unless they want to change.

You're right in that this "lifts the veil of anonymity" and happens to be a really specific case. However, this is not the first time someone has made a fuss over it. There are whole groups/organizations dedicated to gamer equality. This certainly isn't the first time we have discussed this topic here. I believe dsh started the "nerd and male privilege" thread (off the top of my head ). It has also come up within our own community where members have made some off comments.

I couldn't agree more, specially since many "feminists" refuse to use a dictionary and make up their own definitions of the word, leading to bullshit discussions where the goal is not solving or pointing out a problem but shaming and proving yourself superior by bludgeoning people with words.

I always use the same example. People haven't been taught about sexual diversity, they have been preassured to accept gay people so when bisexuals com along, bam! We get the same problem again. And the day racism dissapears, the aliens will come along and we will be back to square one.

I remember reading somewhere that she actually quit playing in the end because he wouldn't lay off. Problem with trash talking is a lot of people don't know the difference between being a tease and being a prick.

Propper trash talk to me is stuff like "Your flash kicks ain't got shit on my YOGA FIRE!"

Being a prick would be to take a personal or tasteless jab at the other player "little scrawny punk ass bitch like you got no chance of beating me" is what I hear in my head when I think about what it would sound like. If you said that kind of stuff to your best friend or something it wouldn't matter because nothing between friends is ever serious with games, at least it shouldn't be.

One one hand, it can be funny.

Weird. I always associated this type of behavior in gamers with the anonymity of the Internet. People say awful things like this during a game all the time but they are usually cowering behind a screen name and a ethernet cable.

To see that kind of bullshit make the leap into such a high profile, corporately sponsored event is disturbing.

Aren't games supposed to be fun?
