I've been debating on whether or not to pick this up. My main concern is I won't understand the story at all having not completed MSG 1 and haven't played MSG 2 at all.

Other than being slightly confused as to how there's a snake in the 60s even though the other games take place in modern times, I can't think of anything that'd be confusing. I'd say go for it.

As long as its understood that the game is a prequel then it should not be too confusing for a new comer to the series. It may be hard to play this one, then go back to say the first one with a more limited control scheme, it would feel like a step back.

Either I dont detect the sarcasam, or you dont really understand the story. The
Snake you are in MGS3 is "Big Boss" the soldier that Solid, Liquid, and Solidus Snake were all cloned from.
The point he was making is that that would likely be the only major story issue that you wouldn't understand having not played the other games in the series. There was no sarcasm involved. To someone just starting the series, theyed just see the character as Snake.

Ah I didnt think of it like that, I took his statement out of context, and read it as if he had been confused about how there was a snake in a different time period. I will edit to reflect this.

Having only played through part of the first game, I'm trying to figure out of that "cloned from big boss" thing is a major spoiler or not. :D

I am going to go with "not" since from what I have seen and heard, it seems they just made up the story as they went through the series anyway. Kind of like the TV show Lost.

I'm under the impression that you find out in the earlier games anyway, but if not, I'll happily edit out the references to it myself. I haven't actually played any of the games.

I haven't been caring much about MGS 3D because I already have the HD Collection, as well as Subsistence for PS2. I don't really need a third port.

As someone who played both PS2 versions of Snake Eater, as well as enjoyed the new control schemes from both MGS4 and PeaceWalker, I'd argue that Snake Eater 3DS is the best way to experience this game. Having said that, I will also say that I'm about 2 hours into it and have been playing only WITH the CPP.
Also, I have no doubt the HD Collection is a better deal, cost wise, with the inclusion of 4 other games, but i honestly feel that the controls are considerably better in this new port, making the 3DS version of Snake Eater in particular, a much more enjoyable experience than the others.

Snake Eater is a port of the "subsistence" version, which has the newer camera that you control with the right stick.
Thanks for that info. I'll definitely pick up the Vita release as I have nothing to play on the damn thing. It's weird that I'm starting to realize that I enjoy the console-sized games on my portables, and retro goodness on the big screen - does that make sense to anyone
