Well Funk, E, my opinion of this game has gone way up. Combat gets easier the more I play, which I attribute to rising stats, tweaking my equipment, using powers, etc. So despite my initial impressions, Mass Effect really is an rpg through and through. It's just that when you start the game and you're kind of weak it seems like you're playing a crappy shooter.
The story so far is superb, maybe the best Bioware has done. Touching on more mature themes than even their two last console rpgs did. I love some of the truly hard choices you have to make at some points in the story, which can have major effects on your party members. There's a truly massive world in this game too. Lots of places to explore and tons of facts to absorb.
The game has some incredible scenarios for you to play through, which each part of the story playing out as a memorable self-contained sci fi adventure. Mass Effect has an epic, movie like quality that neither Knights of the Old Republic or Jade Empire had.
Your allies are still dumb as ever, and can't heal themselves for some stupid reason, but they work well enough as just decoys and distractions to help the player draw out the enemy and avoid ambushes by sending them in first. After leveling them through optional quests, I find them actually doing a fairly good job of holding their own in combat now, though it's still me getting most of the kills. I'm having even more fun with the jeep now as well since I discovered that the scope can zoom in even further than I initially thought, for some really long range combat. The game is really inconsistent about recognizing when its shots are hitting though
Mass Effect isn't perfect, but it's pros are really winning me over. I can't wait to see how the story plays out

I liked Bioshock alot. I generally hate shooters and anything first person so maybe thats why. The last 1/4 of the game seemed less polished and the ending wasn't the best (not as bad as some say). I really enjoyed creatively using the Plasmids and liked the fact the game was somewhat short.
Game of the Year...probably not. Still a very good game. No reason to cast aside the 360.

Nah, I'm not casting aside the 360. Mostly due to how much my opinion on Mass Effect has changedgradualmeltdown wrote:I liked Bioshock alot. Bioshock doesn't suck, I would never say that. I just think it could have been more. My disappointment stems mostly from seeing the potential there, but not seeing it fully used. I'm sure Bioshock 2 will be great though, and that sequel is pretty much guaranteed to be released at some point
I wish I could change the title of this thread. I finished Mass Effect, and wow, just wow. One of the best games I've ever played. THIS is how you do a cinematic game. INCREDIBLE ending, and the final stage and boss fight just kick so much ass. And here's where Mass Effect totally won me over, achievements actually unlock gameplay bonuses for future playthroughs. I now officially love this game. Yeah, I was turned off by it when I started playing, but this game truly kicks ass. The combat system was jarring at first, and your partners AI is lacking, but things smooth out after awhile once you get used to things and start making better use of equipment and powers. I got used to the combat system. In the last stage, I was kicking ass and I beat the boss on my first attempt.
So yeah, I'd HIGHLY recommend this game to anyone. It is most definitely game of the year material. My only real complaint now is that the game can be considered short if you play straight through, but the optional activities extend the game's life and the many different ways you can shape the story are awesome. I know I'll be playing through at least once more(and I want to get the rest of the achievements to see what other cool stuff they unlock). The game sets things up for a sequel, which I'm looking forward to

I was annoyed by the game when I started it and created the thread on impulse. Kind of embarrassed by the thread title now. Sometimes you have to give a game time before you really form an opinion on it. If I did a Mass Effect thread now, it would be called, "Wow, Mass Effect is really awesome"bobbynewmarkiii wrote:GFL - that's hilarious, I've never seen such a turnaround in a thread, let alone from the thread author.
You've totally convinced me to pick up this game as my next big project though
PC owners are lucky, I found out recently that the PC version of the game actually addresses the 360 version's flaws. So that version of the game must be pure perfection. Probably the version to get if you play PC games at all
So I now I move on to Elder Scrolls: Oblivion as my next 360 project. Hope it's as good as everyone says it is
