Aris is an absolute pig, but I am almost more disgusted by the idiots defending him and the kinds of behavior he is trying to justify. They all need to be excised from the communities they purport to speak for, lest they actually succeed in that role.

This is exactly the sort of problem we were kicking around in that "Nerds and Male Privilege" thread. No, of course not everyone in gaming culture is a sexist asshole (I get the impression that most people here aren't, for example), but plenty of people are, and they tend to be vocal and belligerent about it, thus making the culture as a whole look entirely unwelcoming. For some reason, I am not surprised that this problem is especially exacerbated in the macho world of fighting game competitions (further proof that it isn't just isolated to mouth breathing teens slurring over COD matches on Live).

I don't understand what exactly is going on. The only text example given in that article has been corrected to state that it was false. The video example I watched had the supposed victim of this harassment laughing through most of the video.

This kind of stuff hurts me in my gut. How is it that folks like Aris guy can't see the hypocrisy of claiming vicitimization when they're being called out for vicitimizing other people?

I watched part of the super staggered video in that article and while the dude was about as sleazy as they come, she ate it up and laughed the whole time. Hard to feel too sympathetic.

The rest of what he was quoted saying and some of the comments are pure crap though. There is never any excuse to be a bigot. As one commenter said as well, there is a difference between "talking smack" to someone and attacking them because they are of a different race and sex. One is usually playful banter and the other is just harassment.

She was horrified and trying to keep her cool in the hopes he would give up. If a guy is being a sleaze to you and you're in a situation where you can't easily escape, the only way to get through it without completely losing face is to laugh. If you say, "Cut it out man, you're a creep," you are only stoking the fire -- and nobody will think you're tough for standing up for yourself. They will think you are either a baby for requesting some peace or a killjoy for taking offense. She was in a public arena with teammates and an audience, and until she decided to make her statement by forfeiting, she was trying to prove she was stronger than this B.S. without being a negative impact on the event. The coach's comment of "Miranda is all about not being mean" supports the theory that she was gritting her teeth for the sake of her teammates' experience (and possibly out of presumption that some teammates might even find the coach's comments funny, in which case speaking up would upset them and perhaps bring people against her).
