Finally managed to kill Mom's Heart using Cain. Intense fight! Had about a heart and a half left in the end.

I haven't been able to get to the end of The Binding of Issac. I'd get to Stage 5 then my skills turn to shit and I die. I have a couple of other characters unlocked, but I haven't used them.

Isaac is the worst character to begin with. Use the other characters, get further and know what is going to appear next.

It's worth it to explore all rooms until level 5, but after that it's a waste. It's better just to blitz through the stage and go to the boss (since there are no more arcades, shops or upgrade rooms).

I figured Issac would be kind of a crap character. It's just that as long as I can remember, I always felt the need to beat a game as the titular character before I use anyone else. I wouldn't play as any other character in Super Mario Bros. 2 or Sonic the Hedgehog 2 until I beat the game with Mario and Sonic respectively.

Shit, I didn't know that! I'll have to keep that in mind next time I play.

FWIW, Isaac gets better (much) later on, when you unlock The Dice. Amazing item.
