I use this Honestech VHS to DVD capture card for converting old VHS recordings to avis or mpegs. It will work for an NES as well.

It's really nothing super special, but it's cheap and very very easy to use.

If you need capture software with more options for what you are doing, try using VirtualDub. It has a ton of options and is freeware (but good enough that pros use it).

Just came across an ad for Blackmagic-design Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 @$199.99
Says it can connect to any console or TV,but thats about all I know.

I'm using an old 90s PCI card, but I think you should look for an affordable USB stick with decent reviews. I don't know any particular ones so you'll have to do some Googling.
Thanks so much dude! I plan on doing a youtube channel of complete gameplays of video games so people can watch them if they get stuck. I've decided I am not going to include my voice unless I really need to give a tip or something
Thank you so much!

Seriously, I hate LPs. I don't want to hear the voice, and more importantly, PLAY THE WHOLE GAME THROUGH.

I use a Dazzle DVC 100, it's one of few USB cards I've found that will work with the Sega Genesis video signal. Everything else I own freaks out in different ways (bending, scrambling, loss of color, etc.), some of them can't handle the Atari 2600 either. It's pretty cheap and has a nice capture quality, especially through S-Video (I doubt it's leaps and bounds above others, though, so go with whatever you can find that's cheap and works).

The Blackmagic cards would be worth looking at for retro recordings if they ever decide to add 240p support (no official statement, but people are demanding it). That would mean 60 FPS captures without any post-processing necessary, as well as the ability to stream old games at their native frame rates (without the use of emulators).

Micomsoft capture cards are the only ones I've heard of that handle 240p natively. :( I wish there were more available.

As far as playing and capturing at the same time, you have quite a few options besides the already mentioned method of using RF and Composite simultaneously. Hooking up a VCR is usually the cheapest and easiest way, as they often come with multiple composite inputs and outputs, amplifying the signal as it's processed so you don't lose any picture quality on your TV nor your capture card (although I've noticed that a few of these capture cards work with pretty weak signals and still provide a decent picture). Many monitors and TVs provide the same benefit, just look for multiple RCA/BNC jacks and "OUT" labels next to the composite inputs.

For people who want to do S-Video out as well, I'm sure there's a few VCRs (especially SVHS ones) that will do it but they may be harder to find/possibly more expensive. I use a Sony PVM 1354Q for streaming, it has multiple composite inputs/outputs but it also has an S-Video input with a corresponding output. I haven't seen "S-Video out" on many monitors, but I doubt the PVMs are the only ones that offer it, so just check around thrift stores and the like and you'll probably find something.

If you can get one cheap then use a DVD recorder and DVD-R disks.
