Image

The sequel to the excellent Parodius Da!, Gokujō Parodius is the best of the three Parodius games on the Suepr Famicom. More than a simple port of the arcade game, the Super Famicom version added in several playable characters not found in other versions. Goemon, Kid Dracula, and baby Upa.

Image

As horizontal scrolling shooters go, Gokujō Parodius is heavily based on gameplay concepts from Konami's Gradius series, but the difficulty has been toned down to make the game more enjoyable. This is a parody game first and foremost, and although it doesn't take itself seriously, that doesn't mean the game isn't polished to a fine shine.

Everything about it from the visuals, music and huge cast of characters makes it a quality winner that should have actually placed higher up on this list in my view.

Getting hard to think of exclusives past the 150 point, so here's another multi-plat game where I think the SNES version has the edge. I feel like I don't need to say anything about this game that people don't already know. You arguably had the best control scheme on the SNES version due to the controller's unique button layout, so I nominate it for the list

Aerobiz by Koei

The player is the CEO of a start-up international airline. The player competes with three other such companies (either AI-controlled or other players) for dominance in the worldwide travel industry. Such dominance is obtained by purchasing slots in various airports around the world, and flying routes to and from those slots

Wow, this list is getting tight. I may run out of good stuff before 200, but in the meantime, how about...

Uniracers (aka Unirally)

THE BEST UNICYCLE GAME EVER!!! Of course, I can't think of another game focused on such a form of transport either...

I think I have tap-out at this point. I can't think of any others except Wolfenstein 3-D and Doom, which we all know that nearly any other version is better, so they don't REALLY belong.

Well, if I may suggest one more Ranma game...

No, not Neighborhood Combat. That one can sometimes be tough even for fans of the series to enjoy, so we know it doesn't belong here. But how about the Super Famicom exclusive:

Ranma 1/2: Ougi Jaanken

Image

Image

Image

Ougi Jaanken is a Vs. puzzle game based on, as the name implies, rock paper scissors.

The pieces are the hand symbols for the game, and each piece can only be destroyed by the type it is weak to. So if you have a big stack of scissor pieces in your field, you need a rock to wipe them out.

Only one piece is needed to wipe out a big stack, so with some planning you can build up some giant combos that will, as per usual in puzzle games, drop a huge pile of junk pieces on the opponents field. Combos are counted, and filling the combo meter, which is faster or slower depending on the character, unleashes special attacks (at two levels) that create even more junk.

There is also a last ditch save if you're about to lose in the form of a water bucket. Using it in your field will clear out every piece of whatever type you put it on (helpfully clearing the field if its filled to the brim with junk) as well as activate your opponent's curse. The curse effect is temporary, but screws up their combos for a short time. Two characters, one playable and one boss, are immune to the water bucket however.

Its a very fun game, and you certainly don't need to be a fan of Ranma to enjoy it.

As a point of interest, there's also a port of this game that was released on the PC 98 that looks quite different graphically. I've never played it, but I imagine the gameplay is identical. Here's a screenshot of the PC 98 version for comparison's sake.

168. Yoshi's Cookie
Image

The often overlooked game thanks to the completely mediocre puzzle game simply called Yoshi, Yoshi's Cookie is an interesting take on Tetris, and I think it's a superior game than the much more popular Dr. Mario.
Image
In Yoshi's Cookie, you arrange cookie patterns until the screen is cleared of all cookies. The concept is simple and it's great fun on any platform. The SNES version obviously looks better than the NES or GameBoy counterparts, but if you've just got an SNES, make sure you don't pass this game up.

I haven't mentioned it, but as an old Ranma fan who has actually played some of those games, it's nice to see them on here. I don't know if I'd call them the best SNES games ever, but they were fun nonetheless

Anyway, moving on

Interesting action platform game from Sony Imagesoft that has cool magic spells that you get from bosses like healing, stopping time, becoming invulnerable, or turning into a firebird. Some pretty cool boss fights in this game and and a cool soundtrack that sounds kind of Hindu or Indian. There's some cool side scrolling shooter levels too. Not too many people know about this game, but it's pretty good. EGM gave it an 8 out of 10. It's not exactly groundbreaking though, as it borrows elements from other games, like sticking to walls and getting boss power ups Mega Man X style, the Final Fantasy style overworld map, or flying around with mode 7 scaling in effect, but it's a solid game
This video will give you a sense for how cool the game is

Whoa, Skyblazer looks awesome. I think it could do without that sound every time he jumps, but it looks like fun. I'm definitely gonna have to check it out.
