First off... I absolutely love my ridiculously hackable DC and its unique games!
That being said, I am not so blinded by nostalgia to deny it's serious shortcommings (garbage controller for one).
I have been called a sega fanboy by many non-Racket gamers, but some of yall take it to a whole new level. I personally find it quite laughable the way some of my fellow Sega lovers despise and personally blame Sony for DC's failure. Was it not Sega's chronically dumb business decisions that put our beloved DC hardware to rest? Is Sony not simply a business doing what businesses do in this cruel capitalist system in which we live. (would we have even had a DC if it wasn't for this cruel capitalist system?)
Here is a question that will likely get me in trouble: what is REALLY so great about the VMU? How many of you do anything with it away from home?
How can I worship my love the way I do, fully aware that it sports one of the worst controllers ever concieved?
This is by no means a new questions, but would we still consider the DC divine if it had not died young?
Are we delusional?
Contrary to common belief, Tupac was NOT the greatest rapper ever! Very good, but not great. Was DC really the greatest?
Please don't kill me... Im one of you... I just like to remove my Sega goggles every now and then so I can take a look at the real world with some clarity!

lol Playsation FTW! No I like SEGA and I feel there controller was mediocre and great at the same time (those damned handles are too small), frankly when I think about it, the only SEGA ive ever felt the need to play was the Saturn, thats got some great games, and alot of those can be found on Playsation too. I dont blame you for taking off the goggles to see it in a more clear perspective, lots of SEGA fanboys dont realize that Sony won fair and square, its buisness, and whats done is done. Now what IM questioning is how the PS3 is gonna be doing later on in the year, Resistance, LBP, and some others really make me think it will come out on top then theres that other side of me that says, its not going to do that well do to all the hype closed in on the system. Welp, time goes on either way, but unlike SEGA, I highly doubt Sony will drop out of the consoles even if they are failing, then again, they have all the money in the world from their other products so they can keep in, unlike SEGA. Eh w/e.

I think the reason many believe that the Dreamcast is the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) is because it had more of a variety of games... what I mean is when the PS1 came out with it's 3D capability it seemed that all games jumped on the bandwagon and companies were focused on 3D instead of unique gameplay.
Before anyone argues there are exceptions such as Castelvaina SOTN, so don't flame me for making an observation that the majority of PS1 games were focused on being 3D.
The Dreamcast had a steady supply of 2D and 3D games and to traditional gamers both are necessary for a complete gaming experience. PS1 had the awesome 3D fighting games, but the Saturn had the superior 2D ability... and the comparison between the DC and PS2 is similar.
So to summarize I think that the reason many of us claim the DC as G.O.A.T. is that as a system it was more capable of a wider variety of games and not make for 3D ones specifically.

Yeah, I consider the Dreamcast to be the system that did 3D right most often. Sure, there's older 3D games that we'll all agree rock, but a LOT of PS1 games were basically forced to be 3D even if it makes no damn sense. I don't know why, but developers seemed to realize 2D is still good for some genres, and 3D is good for others. Ever heard of Lode Runner 3D? That's the exact definition of 3D where it shouldn't be.SpaceBooger wrote:I think the reason many believe that the Dreamcast is the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) is because it had more of a variety of games... what I mean is when the PS1 came out with it's 3D capability it seemed that all games jumped on the bandwagon and companies were focused on 3D instead of unique gameplay.

But for me, the Dreamcast is my favorite console mostly because it shows that Sega used to be great. They used to make games like Jet Grind Radio, Rez, Seaman... they didn't just push out crappy Sonic games to keep afloat. They would take a chance with a new and original IP. Sure, the marketing and timing failed in ways thought impossible, but it's still great because it's a piece of history that might never be repeated. By the looks of it, Sega is content with making Sonic games that are a disgrace to the name Sonic, we might never see something creative like the games they used to make.
Plus the Dreamcast can play Vectorman in a emulator so it's automatically the greatest system ever.

Interesting, because it would seem that for anything to garner a cult following it must first fail commercially. Take The Rocky Horror Picture Show for example. Things that are a brilliant but fail do seem to attract a hardcore of, dare I say it, elitist followers who extol the virtues of the object of their fandom forever and ever. This is by no means a new questions, but would we still consider the DC divine if it had not died young?
Personally I am a sega fanboy, I admit it but I also admit that its childish and I only enjoy my own fanboy-ism for childish reasons. I hated Sony for years for killing Sega, but now I merely dislike them for it but I would buy a PS3 if I were loaded and it offered me something that I was interested in.
This subject comes up here so often, which I think is a sign of what a bunch of sega fans we are but at least you suggesting a different slant on the thread. I guess the question is answered by imagining a Sony logo on the front of your DC. Now that you have wiped the cold sweat from you brow would you still want to play the array of unique games that it offered? would you still be impressed by the online options it boasted, and the VGA capabilites? Would you still be impressed by the VMU? well the VMU was never that impressive but at least it showed that SEGA was trying, but anyways I think that I would still be impressed with it but I doubt I would shout about it so hard had it been the victor because everyone would already know about it.

I like the saturn better than the PS1 because I played it more often. I like the DC because of the games... I do own a PS2 but I think I play my DC more... just because I like the games more.
I think that SEGA has always been on the edge of the technology they would just come out first while someone else would take more time to do it better - i.e. the SEGA Chanel is equivalent to the Virtual Console or XBOX Arcade.

The VMU has possibly the worst battery life of any portable electronic ever made. The only good reason to have one is if you and a friend are major NFL 2K fans (like me and a friend of mine) and call plays using the thing.nateup2 wrote:Here is a question that will likely get me in trouble: what is REALLY so great about the VMU? I don't see why you don't like it. Sure, it was a little silly having the cord come out the bottom, but I use the VMU and a rumble pack, so the slots are useful. I also think the DC had one of the most comfortable controllers ever made.nateup2 wrote:How can I worship my love the way I do, fully aware that it sports one of the worst controllers ever concieved?
Not sure on that one, it would definatly still have some serious respect, possibly even more. But I doubt people would consider it divine if it had been a sucess. Part of the reason the DC is so loved is because it is an example of the manufacturer getting it right and the market getting it wrong.nateup2 wrote:This is by no means a new questions, but would we still consider the DC divine if it had not died young?
I don't listen to rap, but I can say that the DC is NOT the greatest console of all time. I used to believe that, but I matured a little over the past few years, and I can now see that even though it is my favorite system, it doesn't offer everything that everybody wants. I still can't decide what system was actually the greatest.nateup2 wrote:Contrary to common belief, Tupac was NOT the greatest rapper ever! Very good, but not great. Was DC really the greatest?

Contrary to popular belief, there ARE many of us who don't base opinions on untimely deaths or blind SEGA faith or Sony hatred or distaste for capitalism or whatever other unimportant factor. We are capable of thinking for ourselves.
And...there are people just like me who happen to love the library, controllers, accessories, VMUs, online capability, homebrew applications and the DC's viability as a home-arcade NAOMI board. For me, and many others, the Dreamcast simply offers what we want...and more than any other console.
These aren't the imagined delusions of a cult follower, I actually have real reasons for loving the Dreamcast. (Of course, there is no real way to test whether or not my reasons are in fact just logical illusions to justify my beliefs...but I like to think I am more self-aware than that.)

On the controller - Without 6 buttons on the face, it becomes a hassle to really take advantage of the wonderful 2d brawler library... the small, barely rollable d-pad only makes matters worse, and the lack of a 2nd stick is seriously limiting as well. (FPSs... forget about it) Although it doesnt bother me that much that the cord comes out the bottom, it is way too short. Other than those issues, which I consider to be quite serious, it IS quite comfy to hold... and works fine for many games.
Overall, I agree with a good deal of everyone's comments. For the most part, I think I fall somewhere between Paul and The Doc. I love many of the exclusive games, homebrew, and NAOMI conversions... and that is no delusion! I have to say though, that the esoteric value probably does increase the size of my mouth and strength of vocal cords a bit - sort of along the lines of what Paul had to say.
While we're at it, here is my admittedly biased fav. five, in order:
5. XBOX
4. SNES
3. Neo Geo
2. DC
1. Saturn
