Rock of the Dead

Have any of you guys played this game? I picked it up last week (new, sealed, $10 from GS)... it's certainly not the best game in the world, but it's unique enough to be worth looking into if you like strange games.

Basically it's Typing of the Dead, but with guitar controllers. It's not really a rhythm game like you might expect. There's music playing in the background, but you only have to actually play in rhythm on certain parts (usually boss battles). For the most part it's just "hurry up in hit the notes in this order" to kill enemies (like the typing in Typing of the Dead). And much like TotD or HotD, it's just an onrails affair where you kill zombies, mutated bugs and other weird creatures.

It's very campy. I mean very campy. But of course it's kind of aiming at that as it's a very obvious homage to HotD anyway. The dialogue is ridiculous -- with voices by Doogie Howser himself, along with Felicia Day. And Rob Zombie handled the music. It's totally a "budget title," considering it's MSRP is $10 new after only being out for a couple of years. And really presentation is pretty much something that could have been on PS2. But if you like a good bad game from time to time it's sort of interesting. And I can't really think of a similar guitar-controlled game.

Thanks for the write-up! I've been wanting to check this one out for some time - I'm glad to hear it has some merit. I love oddball games like this. Typing of the Dead is the main reason I bought a Dreamcast.

I can't tell you how times I've picked this game up at GS and then put it back because of that fear that it will suck!

Funny because Typing of the Dead is the one DC game I don't own! Just never got around to getting it for some reason. I would need to buy a special DC keyboard too I suppose or can I just use like USB port keyboard or something to that effect?
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

you need the Dreamcast keyboard. They're cheap. I got mine for like $12 shipped I think and it was still boxed.

When HOTD Overkill came out on PS3 there were rumors it was going to support USB keyboards and a typing mode. I'm so pissed that didn't happen. I could have sold my Dreamcast altogether.

Typing of the Dead was released on PC as well. So, provided it doesn't have compatibility issues (I haven't tried running it on 7), you still could.

(though, holy crap has the PC version shot up in value...)

Wow, I had no idea you could use a regular controller for Rock of the Dead. I always wanted to try this out, but finding good condition guitars is not easy. I really wish gamestop or best buy would carry guitars by themselves.

I'll keep an eye out for this!

I picked it up and played through the first 2 levels. It is very true to the Typing of the Dead formula - which I really like. For a few dollars, it is fun enough for a few plays.

Coincidentally, when I first tried to play it I discovered one of my GH controllers stopped working 100%. The red button no longer registers. :(
