Wow i figure most retro gamers would like this genre as much as platformers, but i guess i was wrong. I really hope you do give it a shot man, its really fun to play in short burst or long burst.
Hint- to survive easily dont focus on all the bullets going on the screen, but rather keep focus on your ship and just dodge.
A genre I never gave a chance...

Haha I know! I have seen the error of my ways though. I played through Ironclad again, and its easily my favorite I have played so far.AznKhmerBoi wrote:Wow i figure most retro gamers would like this genre as much as platformers, but i guess i was wrong. edit:
Holy crap, I just played Twinkle Star Sprites...it was the hardest, cutest game I have ever seen. I bet it would be a blast to play 2 player on. Oh yeah, and the music was awesome, the level 2 track was so sweet.

You wouldn't have known about it if I didn't mention it. Not many have played it or were probably turned off by the name, but they're missing outjay_red wrote:Holy crap, I just played Twinkle Star Sprites...it was the hardest, cutest game I have ever seen. Some of my favorite SHMUPS are Radiant Silvergun, the Thunder Force games are very enjoyable, Ikaruga is downright amazing even though it has already been mentioned (polarity switch for the WIN), Axelay for SNES was a great shooter, albeit sometimes the Mode 7 can interrupt your shooting, Darius Twin is pretty good, Gradius 3 is pretty obvious, R-Type III is a solid shooter, UN Squadron is a surprisingly neat little shooter as well.

The SNES version is pretty different from the arcade version... and I'm not sure if there's a reason to not choose Shin. (Shin's main weapon upgrades faster, Mickey Scymon gets more from *very rare* mid-stage ammo refills and I can't tell if Greg Gates recovers from taking damage any quicker than anyone else.)jaundice wrote:UN Squadron is a surprisingly neat little shooter as well.
I personally would suggest the "lighter" shmups, like earlier titles Missile Command or Tempest or Asteroids 2: Maelstrom.
Or rail-shooters (Panzer Dragoon (SS), Space Harrier (various), the ultra-rare Panorama Cotton (MD). (I suppose Dynamite Duke (ARC/MD), Wild Guns (SNES) and gun-games like Battle Clash (SNES) work too.)
Or arena shooters (Smash TV (various), Pocky & Rocky 2 (SNES), Chaos Engine (MD), Monday Night Combat)
I'm a bigger horizontal fan, so it's all R-Type Leo (ARC), Dragon Breed (ARC), Cotton (TG/NGPC/SNES) (and its close-imitator Magical Chase (TG/GB), and of course Parodius (NES/GB/SNES/PSX/SS/TG)
Speaking of cute'em ups (which are usually more lenient), try Gunbird (SS/DC) -- and I totally second the motion for Twinkle Star Sprites (NG/SS/DC)
Since jayisred owns a NGCD, how about Last Resort? (And if you ever go totally nuts for SHMUPs, and have the capital to fund your addiction, get a PCE-CD.)

Ummm… unless there's another Monday Night Combat I'm not aware of, MNC is a third person shooter in a MOBA, not an arena shooter like Smash TV or Robotron.pakopako wrote:Or arena shooters (Monday Night Combat)

I tried Last Resort, it was a little hard for me, I will give it another shot for sure though.pakopako wrote: Since jayisred owns a NGCD, how about Last Resort? (And if you ever go totally nuts for SHMUPs, and have the capital to fund your addiction, get a PCE-CD.)
One thing I like and dislike at the same time with the shooters on the NG-CD is that you have unlimited continues. It makes the games not as frustrating, but at the same time you are not as challenged, as you just hit start and you are back in the action.

That's a big "did not do the research" from me. I remember seeing a demo back in 2010 looking like it was a 1+ player game with various stages of bot-swarms.

Re: A genre I never gave a chance...
That was a game mode they had in the base MNC. But the more popular one was the DotA mode. And now they're coming out with Super MNC, which is even more DotA like (really more LoL like, F2P and a rotating player selection).pakopako wrote:Oops.MrPopo wrote:Ummm… unless there's another Monday Night Combat I'm not aware of, MNC is a third person shooter in a MOBA, not an arena shooter like Smash TV or Robotron.pakopako wrote:Or arena shooters (Monday Night Combat)

Ooh. So many acronyms.MrPopo wrote:That was a game mode they had in the base MNC. But the more popular one was the DotA mode. And now they're coming out with Super MNC, which is even more DotA like (really more LoL like, F2P and a rotating player selection).
DotA (Defense of the Ancients) -- I remember this; a WarCraft3 mod that became LoL.
F2P (Free-2-Play) -- So, more like LoL. (Sounds like they're building some complex world for such a simple original premise. It's like AMERICAN GLADIATORS: The MMORPG.)
