@dunpeal, honestly, I think people are more upset that they just shelled out pre-order bux and they don't want to hear anything negative, sorta like the housewife finding out her florist husband is gay - it just can't be!

By any means, don't stop posting about shmups - this board needs people like you who will actually talk about it, educate, and clarify things. You know what shmups forums can be like if you ask a really stupid question, it's nice that we have shmup afficionados like you to drop knowledge on us. Thanks bro.

To the rest of the folks who are just "not bothered", shmups simply are not serious business to them really (not sure why they are buying pre-orders, but...) so to those folks, these problems aren't overly concerning, because, my chopper still shoots bullets, so what's the problem?

And for the blind support of GRev, mom and pop or not, typically mom n' pops who focus on one particular thing, do it well, that is why they are a mom n' pop and that is how they maintain a loyal fanbase - by doing one thing and doing it better than anyone else. The idea that they are small and this is all they do, so cut them slack? That logic really baffles me.

There really isn't much logic to it. It's just my humble opinion. I expect the best from big guys like Cave, but I just appreciate effort from the underdogs. That's just how I'm programmed. I was perhaps charmed by Murayama's (G.rev's founder) personality and weirdness in his interviews in Famitsu and other publications. He just seems like a cool guy I could totally hang out with in an arcade and just mess around with various shooters. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind nor do I think other people are wrong, I'm just stating my thoughts, like everyone else. Dunpeal is doing everyone a service, I'm simply babbling. So you're right, it is blind support. If I like someone, I support them. There are holes in this logic, but I'm content.

what did you mean by this? I just got UDHD and I had thought you meant that there was NO scores in the game or something. But there is, so I was just curious what the complaint was about UD's scoring system?

This reply can be 10,000 words and not properly answer your question fully, so, take this as a super revised cliff's notes.

Scoring system examples:
Shoot X, get 100pts.
Shoot X, Y, Z, get 100, then 200, then 300 = 600pts
Shoot X, Z, Y, get 100, then 100, then 100 = 300pts
Rewards doing things in the proper order

Shoot X w/turbo fire = 100pts
Shoot X w/by tapping fire = 200pts
Shoot X w/bomb = 0pts
Rewarding more difficult type of shot

Collect blue object = 100pts
Collect blue object, blue object, blue object, blue object = 100, 200, 400, 1,600 = 2,300 for 4 out of 4 objects
Collect blue object, blue object, miss blue object, blue object = 100, 200, 0, 100 = 400pts for 3 objects
Rewards chaining objects together

These are just a few examples, but the more complex a scoring system, the more enjoyable the game can be for "most" people. Scoring creates a second (and imo, better) element in addition to survival.

^ok. So you're saying that what, UD's scoring system is just overly simple?

Yes. Under Defeat doesn't go far beyond "BLOW SOME SHIT UP" for a scoring system.

There's nothing wrong with that, but it severely limits replay value in my opinion.

You can read this entire thread if you want to, but personally my only significant complaint is captured in the first post. I do not like games that reward you for dying.

In Garegga, considered to be the best shmup of all time (yes, they voted) the EXACT OPPOSITE is true, the BETTER you do, the harder the game becomes and higher scoring becomes possible.

Same thing w/the game i'm playing now, Deathsmiles. Once you start chaining, you keep on chaining the hell out if it, until you get hit - then you have to build yourself backup before you can start scoring again, thus, rewarding skilled play.

I've had the PS3 version since release day and have been having a blast with it. Finished the first and second loop on New Order mode. I have no complaints. I'm playing on a widescreen HDTV. There is actually a problem with the sound though on the 4th boss (the snow mission). The sound gets all distorted and the music cuts out, not sure if it's just me. New Order mode is great, despite all the complaints I've been reading here.

New Order Mode looks gorgeous. And I haven't had any issues with getting hit by enemies off screen or anything yet. Though I think I prefer playing in Arcade Mode if I had to choose one over the other. But not sure yet.

In my limited time playing so far, I think it's really fun. Like I said, I didn't have the DC version, so I have nothing to compare it to. But I'm glad I bought it. So far I can't beat the 2nd level on Normal difficulty let (using no continues).
