...Final Fantasy VII's story is fucking brilliant. The majority (that is to stress not all, but definitely the majority) of people who criticize it don't realize how much there is going on behind the Cloud-Tifa-Aerith love triangle and Sephiroth being "evil". Do some reading -- I've put these in the proper logical order so that the depth of Final Fantasy VII's universe should become apparent. Environmentalism is an incredibly difficult subject to delve into without coming off as smug and heavy-handed -- SquareSoft delivered its message with the utmost sincerity by going to quasi Dune-like lengths in order to create a world in which their statements felt organic and powerful. Human drama occurring within this world makes the stage all the more believable.

I did cry at Aerith's death -- I was only seven, though (Final Fantasy VII taught me how to read -- seriously). Now that it's been so trivialized in popular gaming culture, its effect has been almost completely neutered. I might still cry at it, were circumstances a little different. What does still make me cry, however, is Bugenhagen's Laboratory. I was raised in a pagan household, and I proudly consider myself a New Age Gaian -- this made me cry as a child, and it makes me cry even more now. Just beautiful.

This video that artistically summarizes the events of Half Life 2 reminds me of just how powerful the storytelling in that game was:
Also, I need to go back and finish Silent Hill 2. From what I did play, though it didn't make me cry, I felt a sadness for the torment James endured over the loss of his wife:
Also, Dead Island had a very moving trailer, though I've never played the actual game:

I know its not a video game, but I was watching Flowers For Algernon (2000), and that was the first movie to have me crying, it was a good movie, but I hated the ending, it's very depressing.

I'm the only one who feels sad for Majora's Mask history? When you give that final rest to Darmani or when Mikau leave he's unfinished mision to you?

Majora's Mask is devastating. That's part of what makes it so great. It's like you're working your ass off to save this doomed world.

Monster Rancher II
Just imagine you had a dog that just died and you're playing this game after going through your first loss of life. Suddenly you're playing this game and you're enjoying how you're leveling your monster and suddenly your monster falls asleep with its soul going to heaven with everyone grieving.
I just remembered now that this game put me through some real big tears.

AdamGomez1987's post reminded me that I totally cried the first time my Tamagotchi died. I constructed a little Japanese-esque gravestone monument for it out of posterboard, and posted a "tribute" on one of those virtual pet memorial sites that were so rampant on GeoCities back in the day.

Yeah, you know where I'm coming from then. Now when I play Monster Rancher 3 and 4, they really watered down the death sequences. In fact, I don't believe part 4 has a death sequence. Monster Rancher 3 if I remember correctly has them turn into energy and makes it look rather flashy. Monster Rancher 2 however, it was night time and your monster is suddenly showing age and keels over to sleep. One of the most dramatic death sequences I've seen in a video game and it's just like that of an actual pet.Key-Glyph wrote:AdamGomez1987's post reminded me that I totally cried the first time my Tamagotchi died. Digimon World 1 has a rather awkward death sequence as well, I was sad the first time he died but it was no where the feeling that Monster Rancher II brought because your monster is reincarnated back to the digi egg to try again.

Oooh, I loved those stages, they are so carefully planned. Seeing your guys take it so seriously while even the note sound change to something more appropiate is really great.YoshiEgg25 wrote:Ugh, that Christmas one. Those of you who played those games will know what I'm talking about. In each game, there is one sad story. It always got to me, even the fucking American one. Not only did the opening story make me cry, but I was crying even more during the songs themselves.
That said, the "fail" cutscenes are hilarious

Re: Has a video game ever made you shed a tear?
I always thought Squaresoft was making fun of environmentalists. As full of holes as the plot is, I really like the game. For me the emotional part was the music. I could go on for a long time about how brilliant it is on the technical level or whatever but man, it really moved me. Since then I've heard better VGM but it's still pretty powerful. I didn't feel bad when Aerith died, though, because there wasn't enough characterization to make me feel for her. Ending of Crisis Core was pretty sad, even though that one didn't make sense either.
I was pretty mad when Rydia got eaten at the beginning of FFIV. I had worked hard on her and she was a little girl. I know FFIV is Shakespearean to a fault, but that was the first important death and it did make me angry, although I didn't cry.
Let's see...A game that did make me cry was Sly 2. The writing, dialogue and characters were so good. I really felt a connection to them as a player and related to all of them. As a computer programmer, sarcastic lady killer, and martial artist I was pretty much all three in one
All seriousness aside, everyone needs to play this game. Even if you don't weep you'll probably be affected at the end. It's a really cool platformed besides.
Jeanne D'Arc really surprised me with the death of a character that was especially sudden and really gruesome. Not the kind of dignified death that usually comes to pretty RPG girls. I really missed her after that - I had to adjust my gameplay too.
Ace Combat 5 also has a character die and he's the most verbose, lighthearted guy in the whole game. The entire atmosphere of the game feels empty without his radio chatter and every time you look behind you and see only two planes, you remember him. I didn't cry, but I missed him and was pretty shocked at what happened.
