his is the only video game community I'm still active at. SegaXtreme and Sega-16 were some older hang outs of mine. I lurk them every once in a while from time to time.

I joined SegaXtreme about five years ago and got flamed by a bunch of vets there for asking how to fix my Dreamcast after a backup of Virtual On through the laser calibration off. Despite the fact that I didn't specifically request a backup, it really pissed them off that I had used one as if I said something bad about their mothers. I was told "stop pirating games" and that "I deserved it". The irony of it all is that the site hosts torrent links to DC games now.

I mostly frequent the boards at x-strikestudios.com, because they're a company that I'm actively involved with. They're a film production company whose focus is creating feature-length film adaptations of video games that better capture the original spirit of the games than Hollywood's efforts. Obviously they can't compete with the multimillion-dollar budgets of Hollywood's best, but their films are funny, lovingly-made tributes that appeal directly to hardcore gamers. I work as a professional actor in theatre and film, and have appeared in two of their movies, one based on River City Ransom, the other based on the Resident Evil series.

As a video game-movie company, the forums tend to focus on (duh) video games and movies, and to a lesser extent, geek culture at large. Popular discussion revolves around reviews of new games and films, classic series, game mechanics and game design theory (i.e. this game is better than that game and why. But fancier).

Started as a dreamcast forum, but goes through phases of torrent activity. Great community there, but I post more here most of the time.

anyways. Yeah the rules behind discussion of bootlegs for a long time over there were very tight. It had to do a lot with the progression of the site and the different hills it had to climb in sharing bootlegs. A lot of the vets basically took it as an image they had to uphold... knowing that in a couple years time that image would change with the rules.

The main beef everyone had was that rules were stated and most people didn't bother to read them. After a lot of begging from people, the mods and vets basically just got tired of it and were pretty cruel to a lot of new members that didn't read the rules in depth (which hey, even a lot of mods never read them in depth either). So yeah... I'm not surprised.


The place died down though, for several reasons including this one, after seeing racket around their with links to this site I kinda just followed over to here. I always liked him over there, a very deliberate and nice guy. I figured he'd run a pretty good site. Low and behold, it turned out to be a REALLY good site. I think quite a few of us came over from there, and that is probably what causes this site to kinda be viewed as "sega-centric". The vets here kinda came from a Sega background.

I used to be very active on the FamicomWorld forums. Now I'm active on this site and I rarely visit that forum anymore. I would say I'm more of a forum hopper, I never seem to stick with one.

I can see how the vets would get burned out on having to tell people to stop sharing or requesting bootlegs, so perhaps I just had bad timing. From my perspective I was just asking a technical question about fixing my DC, and had no intention of requesting any kind of download. I had read the rules and I guess I felt like my request for help was still valid. Funny thing is, I wasn't even big on playing burned DC games. I always burned them to try them out before buying, but it's hard to get anyone on the net to believe you. Oh well, I never fixed that DC and just got a new one for $25 at the time.

I think that is why I like the forum so much. We can discuss these things freely without fear of being crucified. Even game collector's like myself use things like ROMs and Isos. It's how I determine a lot of my retro purchases.

I check into Sega-16 and DigitPress every now and then just to check into things.

Yeah, you are still #2. The only one to beat you, and beats all, is Mal. Man that boy has been around for ever. I just barely make the top 10. Shit, Cloud beats me. Now there is a weird fellow.

I checked out DigiPress and only a few posts in I'm thinking that might be the forum where all of the "I got beat up in high school and I'm a straight up dork" gamers go to post. Sorry but after some basic responses there to stuff I find myself classifying those cats into the same category as this OCD, fat, obnoxious mouth breathing, moron with a body ticking problem that I used to work with at FuncoLand when I was like 19.

On the other hand, if the majority of gamers nowadays actually are that guy, maybe it's time for me to pack it in completely with this stuff rather than possibly drawing myself in more. heh heh....
