Re: Thread where we help each other gain exposure to new gen
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Bulletstorm did seem interesting to me, but it being by Epic games makes me weary of it. Painkiller is one I have played, awesome game. Team Fortress seems cool but I'm not into competitive FPS games.
On the action side of things, Armored Core is where it's at. Check out the upcoming Armored Core 5, I played a demo and it's awesome. It kind of simplifies the controls a bit, something that turned people away from the previous installments, so if frustrating controls are something that make mech games difficult for you to get into, you should check it out. Other Armored Core games I would highly recommend would be Armored Core 2 Another Age (AC at it's finest, but this new game just might top it), and Armored Core 4 Answer (very fast/speedy gameplay).
This sounds like it could be fun, how does the online play work? It's co-op right?noiseredux wrote:So perhaps Bordrelands would also be a good fit for you. It's cheap on PS3 and has online multiplayer, so we could play together even.
I could go on and on here. Mech games are a favorite of mine. If I'm not mistaken you like RPGs, so perhaps Super Robot Taisen Original Generation for GBA would appeal to you. It's a SRPG, very fun game, great music. Also check out the Front Mission series.MrEco wrote:mech games

Silent Hill 2. Best horror game out there, one of the best games out there period, and I'm not the only person that feels this way. If you're a "massive pussy" and Resident Evil 5 scares you though, this game might make you shit yourself, so there's that to consider. Silent Hill 1-3 are all fantastic games.horror games
Re: Thread where we help each other gain exposure to new gen
A horror game... that's not too scary, that's a hard one, maybe the original RE 1 and 2, with the dated graphics and cheesy voice actors you would laught instead of scare, when you're feeling more brave you can try silent hill, and the Penumbra series. When i start with the horror games was a really scary too, but now i have scare i like to have scare (that makes sense?)MrEco wrote:I'll ask for two.
Firstly, mech games. I've tried one or two (Can't remember the titles) but they had terrible controls, your character moved really slowly, and the AI was always kicking my ass.
Second, horror games. I love the idea of a horror game, but there's one problem. I'm a massive pussy. Resident Evil 5 even scared me once. It's a miracle I was able to complete RE4 and the Dead Space games. However, I can't help but feel those aren't "true" horror games and want to try something with less guns and explosions. Yet something that's not too scary either.

I'm also looking some mech game to start.

Mech games fall into two categories: simulation and arcade. I'm not counting SRPGs because honestly SRPGs aren't really defined by what you are controlling. It just affects the underlying storyline.MrEco wrote:I'll ask for two.

The arcade games are games where you control a giant robot but things tend to be pretty fluid. In general it isn't too different from controlling a person except you might have some kind of special movement option that ties in with the fact that you're a mech. This breaks down into two subcategories: 2D platformers and 3D third person shooters.
In terms of platformers the big ones are Cybernator, Front Mission Gun Hazard, and Metal Warriors. All three can be found on the SNES. They all play similar to Contra but have additional features to be more mech-like. For example, you can do things like a long dash or a hovering jump. Past those three there are games like Target Earth on the Genesis, Assault Suit Leynos 2 on the Saturn, and Metal Storm on the NES.
Third person mech games have three major series that make up the core. First you have the Virtual On fighting games. One-on-one fighting between your mech and his. The second is Armored Core, where you stomp through an environment and complete objectives. It controls similar to most third person shooters but you tend to have more mech-like weapon selection and movement options, like jumps and dashes. MechAssault is the third and as I understand it controls similar to Armored Core, though I haven't played it myself since it is a travesty to every thing I hold dear.
Simulation games are all about making you feel like you're piloting the mech; it's similar to a flight simulator in that respect. In these games the control is much more like you are a driver rather than directly controlling where you go. You tend to set a throttle and your mech will keep going straight unless you turn or reduce the throttle. Frequently you have to be more careful with how you use your weapons. This happens to be my favorite of the mech genres. Notable titles are the MechWarrior series, the Earthsiege series, and Steel Battalion. Note: you can get MechWarrior 4 for free off of mektek.net. I would consider MechWarrior 4 to be the most accessible of the MechWarrior series if you'd like to give the simulation genre another try.

Yes, online for Borderlands is co-op. Although characters aren't stuck in solo or co-op land. I have a maxed out character that I pretty much played solo, but I'd also use to power other people through stuff.

Im sort of in the same boat as you except for some reason I found the action style horror games to be heaps scarier. Dead space is one of the scariest games I have played. obvious choices would be resident evil games and silent hill games (resident evil games are less scary). You might also want to try the two Siren games on ps2 for some stealth based game play, The Thing which has a cool squad based system where you have to make your team trust you and also Cold Fear which I haven't played but I have heard its more of an action style game similar to resident evil 4.MrEco wrote:I'll ask for two.

Re: Thread where we help each other gain exposure to new gen
Can someone recommend some modern (by "modern" I mean Windows XP and above or console, I suppose) Western RPGs that may have flown under the radar.
I like mainly swords and sorcery/fantasy type stuff. My absolute favorites are D&D games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, and Neverwinter Nights. I'm not crazy about these AAA titles that have been coming out lately (Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls), but I did enjoy Divinity II, Dragon Age (the first one, not so much the second one), Risen, Torchlight and The Witcher.
I feel like I must have missed some games along the way though. I keep seeing really inexpensive CRPGs on Amazon, but can't tell if they're worth playing. Any recommendations: send 'em my way!
(yes, I do play games that aren't JRPGs!

@Brunoafh-If Bioshocks your thing and 90's FPS tickle your fancy may I suggest a few..
Not Sure which systems you own
Bioshock 2-although I presume you've already delved into this one,I highly recommend the DLC especially Minervas Den!
Half Life 2 (Orange Box)-Great story telling, mind bending puzzles and fun set pieces.
Fallout 3-Even being considered RPG/FPS Hybrid-Vast Expansive game that keeps a high replayability. Also havent seen to much to compare this too (enviorment wise)
90's Style
Timesplitters 2 & Future Perfect-Easy to use Map Maker,Goofy campaign mocks most popular games (Bond,Halo,MOH etc).Robust MP features, not a demanding game to play and provides tons of fun replayability.
Unreal Tournament-Bots,CTF,FTW!
@MrEco-
Mech type games that are accessible...
Front Mission Evolved-Isnt game going for $10 bucks?
I bought it at launch and while I wasnt super stoked or anything,I did sit and play this exclusively until beaten and that says alot considering I usually flip flop between games hardly finishing them quickly.
Mainly your run of the mill 3rd person shooter controls, the mechs actually can move more than 2 mph.Nice amount of customizations and Online MP too.The game does add some out of mech action which breaks up the pace nicely.
Also would like to note one of the top hardest games Ive ever beaten.
S.L.A.I-I think this title focuses more on the lan/online gameplay, but can be played single player as well.Ive played briefy as there is an extensive tuturiol and some what confusing menus. But once I got to the action it was a blast to play!
The controls in this game are more loose and floaty than your typical mech sim,but overall has a cutesy look and is a blazing twitchy shooter as well as custom mech loadouts.
Also other mech games:Custom Robo & Mech Assualt Series.
As for your lil problem with horror
For one of my all time favorite genres Ive left no stone unturned to find my fix in obscure places...Check these out!
Eternal Darkness,Monster House,Luigi's Mansion
D-Have to try this out, very chill but dark and suspenseful.More interactive/Puzzle 1st person view.
Raw Danger/Disaster Report-True Meaning of survival and True meaning of Horror (When Mother Nature Decides to go Ape Shit On Us)
Hope you guys like the suggestions, let me know if any workout and happen to be a new favorite gem of yours
EDIT:
@BoneSnapz-WesternRPGs
Sacred is it pt 1 or 2?(360/PS3)-I wasnt to thrilled about the selection of characters, but everything you've come to like about D&D Baldurs Gate has been implemented here. The progress tree, hack n slash, loot and summon a creatures to wreak havok (I believe you can summon a demon that can disrupt online games, killing everyone and anything!)
Simple adventure, lot of territory to cover and with up to a party of four you can grind your perfect character.
Dark Souls/Demon Souls-Although not very western at all,I get what you mean (non turn based).Hard Yes,impossible No quite possible one of the best games ever made!
I think Dark Souls maybe some what easier and you dont have to play Demon Souls to understand whats up,non the less 10-15 hrs in and only on level/chapter 2
Beautiful Game really.
On a off shoot,I really really like Dark Messiah M&M Elements.
Sorta like a budget Elderscrolls and very miss directed when it comes to feedback/reviews,but yet now cheap enough to look all past that.So if your looking for an Oblivion type game that isnt as huge and much more easier to just pick up and play look no further.
