Some of us have genres that we've never bothered exploring. We *assume* we won't like them. And maybe we're right. But I've always been a fan of investigating any games from any genres, as long as there's something interesting about it. So for an example I'm not a really big FPS fan, but decided to give Borderlands a try because of how great its cartoon-style artwork looks. Low and behold, I quite enjoy Borderlands.
So with that in mind I thought we could have a thread to help each other ease into new genres... like say a certain member says "I've never played an RPG." We all tend to know each other fairly well and could recommend a good RPG for that person to start with mabye because we know it has a story that member would appreciate, or it was made by a developer that that member is a fan of, or whatever.

Re: Thread where we help each other gain exposure to new gen
Interesting idea. I'll start.
I have lost all interest in the FPS genre. In the 90s, FPS was pretty much my favorite genre. I love Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, System Shock, Unreal, Serious Sam all that kind of stuff. Ever since Call of Duty-esque took over I've lost all interest. I would enjoy playing a game similar to the games I mentioned, but I don't really know of any like that aside Serious Sam 3, which I can't play because I don't have a gaming PC. The last FPS I was able to enjoy was Bioshock, although I found System Shock 2 to be the better game in pretty much every way.
Any suggestions for me?

well you sound similar to me -- I loved Wolf3d and Doom back then but pretty much avoided most FPS games recently. So perhaps Bordrelands would also be a good fit for you. It's cheap on PS3 and has online multiplayer, so we could play together even. I'm still not that good yet. But the artstyle and characters have a ton of personality, so I feel like it would interest you. Maybe check if there's a demo on PSN?brunoafh wrote: Any suggestions for me?

For something that goes a little bit out of genre, try Mirror's Edge. It's more about Parkour than shooting, and it's all the more exciting for that reason.brunoafh wrote:Interesting idea. I'll start.

For something that sticks to FPS nuts & bolts, try Bulletstorm. I thought it was going to be utterly stupid, but the gameplay is actually quite enjoyable because it brings back that "high score" mentality and it's a surprisingly beautiful setting, despite the game being full of penis jokes and over-the-top gore.

I'd also recommend Hard Reset. The system requirements aren't too high if I recall correctly and it's by an indie dev who fondly remember the days of Doom and other such FPS's. Lots of stuff to blow up, no cover system, and an interesting weapon upgrade system where on your first playthrough you'll only be able to use about half the weapons, but on a new game plus you can become a walking arsenal.

FWIW I saw Bulletstorm for 360 and PS3 in the clearance bin at Target the other day. The 360 one was $20.98, presumably the PS3 one was well. I will likely pick it up for PC at some point myself.J T wrote:For something that sticks to FPS nuts & bolts, try Bulletstorm.

As far as modern day FPS games go, I'm gonna second Mirror's Edge and also recommend the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games on the PC.

I'm going to recommend Team Fortress 2. It's the sequel to a Quake mod and you can really feel the roots here. Juggling people in the air, fast gameplay, rockets, no instakills...It's also very diverse so you will probably like it.

Painkiller. You can get it on pc and xbox original (though it is suppose to be rare).brunoafh wrote:Interesting idea. I'll start.

The game came out in 2004 so you shouldn't have to worry about if your pc is powerful enough to run it.

I'll ask for two.
Firstly, mech games. I've tried one or two (Can't remember the titles) but they had terrible controls, your character moved really slowly, and the AI was always kicking my ass.
Second, horror games. I love the idea of a horror game, but there's one problem. I'm a massive pussy. Resident Evil 5 even scared me once. It's a miracle I was able to complete RE4 and the Dead Space games. However, I can't help but feel those aren't "true" horror games and want to try something with less guns and explosions. Yet something that's not too scary either.
