No, scores are there for people who want to breeze past the review and decide immediately whether to buy it or not, because they've been reading articles and watching trailers for months and pretty much already have their mind made up. The fact that any game that gets below, say, a "7", is immediately disregarded by the masses highlights everything that is wrong with the system. (or if that's not good enough, the uproar every time Gamespot doesn't give the internet's favorite franchise enough imaginary cookies)
Personally, I get all my reviews from Youtube, and I don't much pay attention to upcoming releases until after they arrive.

Re: You can't spell ignorance without...
Any review from Alistair Pinsoff from destructoid makes my blood boil. Just causually viewing his site, I found that he thinks Psychonauts is a bad game, saying that the while the world and story are great, the gameplay is terrible. This is a complaint he levels at half the games he reviews.
Also Dale North from Destructoid. I have tried to find as many of his reviews as possible, and in the 20 or so reviews I found, only once did he give a game a score below an 8. That one game got a 7. It's so bad that whenever he reviews a game I have to do this calculation:
((His review of how good he thinks it is)-8)x5=more realistic score.
Actually screw it, anyone from Destructoid who's not Jonathan Holmes. They all suck.

Collision Chaos, Past.
So people shouldn't have opinions?noiseredux wrote:whatever. This is exactly why I think scores/ratings are really stupid.Luke wrote: Achievements are the new High Score.

what??? Did you read my post. I'm saying people SHOULD have opinions. And they should state them. With words. So other people know what the opinion is.Luke wrote: You are basically saying "no one should have an opinion".
Luke: What do you think of Robocop?
Noise: 8.
Luke: Ok, so you like it. But what do you THINK about?
Noise: 8.
Luke: Yeah, I know, 8.... but what parts do you think it did right? What if anything would you change?
Noise: 8.
^where's the opinion there?

I could say it better than Noise has.
Nobody has any other funny "review" or "article" to cry to? Surely we aren't running out of examples =p

I like thumbs up/thumbs down stuff. I mean if you really want to know a quick opinion, I think "recommended" or "not recommended" is a lot more useful than "eehhhh... 8"

First off, Robocop is a 10.noiseredux wrote:what??? Did you read my post. I'm saying people SHOULD have opinions. And they should state them. With words. So other people know what the opinion is.Luke wrote: You are basically saying "no one should have an opinion".

But I get your point, now you'd like me to state why Robocop is a ten. I get that. BUt even if I went on a diatribe on why Robocop should be a ten, you would still find the numbered rating dumb, right?

no, you're not listening.Luke wrote: But I get your point, now you'd like me to state why Robocop is a ten. I get that. BUt even if I went on a diatribe on why Robocop should be a ten, you would still ifnd the numbered rating dumb, which I think is dumb.
What I find dumb is that the guy in that review gave music a "5.5" but never once mentions the music in his review. Therefore, I have no idea what the 5.5 means... does he not like the genre? Was it poorly emulated? Is there no music at all? Is it the Japanese soundtrack and he prefers the American? There is no opinion/fact stated in the review to tell me what 5.5 means, or why it was rated as such.
To go a step further, IncognitoD then got pissed about the 5.5 rating... but again, without any explanation of the 5.5, what are we discussing? Just an arbitrary number.
Re: You can't spell ignorance without...
That's fine, I just found your comment to be a broad generalization of how people rate things. I didn't know that "ratings are silly" just pertained to this one review.noiseredux wrote:What I find dumb is that the guy in that review gave music a "5.5" but never once mentions the music in his review.Luke wrote: But I get your point, now you'd like me to state why Robocop is a ten. Re: You can't spell ignorance without...
it doesn't perntain to just that review. But that review, and then Incognito D being upset about the 5.5 are good examples of WHY scoring/ranking games in reviews has gotten to a bad place. Reviews make up a number without supporting text, and readers tend to care far more about that made up number than what the review actually says.Luke wrote: That's fine, I just found your comment to be a broad generalization of how people rate things.
