I recently got back into the GB/GBC, but I live in something of a cave and I'd really forgotten what a pain it was to always have some sort of external light source to see the screen clearly. I've seen a few frontlit Original Game Boy's and Game Boy Pockets for sale online, but what I'd really like is a nice looking lit Game Boy Color.
I've seen a few walkthroughs about how to do this, but I really can't solder to save my life. Anyone have an idea where I could get one, or send one in to have it custom made? I'd love some firsthand accounts about this, (screen quality and such) but I'd really also like any info about backlit vs. front lit, etc.
Thanks!

Re: Frontlit/Backlit Game Boy Color
You can add an internal front light using the front light from a GBA SP (the early front lit version)
I did the same thing to my NGPC, but it is the same principal with the GBC, there is even a walkthough on doing it specifically with the GBC somewhere.

Its a pretty straight forward process, the biggest issue I had was how fragile the front light screen is, you cant touch it or get anything on it or it will be pretty much ruined.
If you have any other questions about the process I would be happy to answer them.

Re: Frontlit/Backlit Game Boy Color
Do you specifically want a back/front lit Gameboy Color, or do you just want to be able to play your GBC games in the dark? If it's more the latter, then I'd just recommend going for a GBA SP, or better yet, an SP+. The normal SP has a frontlight, which is more than good enough for most people, the SP+ has a backlight, which looks freaking fantastic, but it's a bit harder to find. I figure price-wise, it'd be about the same, or maybe even less money to get an SP over having a GBC modified.
However if you're really down for a modified GBC, then I say go for it! Just pointing out options!

I'd really prefer the GBC's form factor over the SP but I had never heard of SP+ before. I'll take a better quality picture over form factor any day.Lokkenjawnz wrote:Do you specifically want a back/front lit Gameboy Color, or do you just want to be able to play your GBC games in the dark? Re: Frontlit/Backlit Game Boy Color
There is no "sp+" it was just a hardware revision that you can find noted by the model number ags-101 on the back. This model came with a backlit screen instead of the front-lit that the first models did. The backlit version is much brighter and more vivid for sure though.

Yeah there's no official "sp+" it's just a bit easier to refer to it as such to tell the difference between the two models.jay_red wrote:There is no "sp+" it was just a hardware revision that you can find noted by the model number ags-101 on the back.
