I'll give you a hint.

The console's manufacturer is Nintendo.
So? This list is pretty expansive. Expecting the same of the follow-up system isn't unreasonable.

Yeah I don't understand that response. Nintendo may have been skeptical of bringing JRPGs state side with the NES but they haven't kept them in short supply since. They have made some sketchy decisions on localizing a few games sure but...I mean the SNES is considered one of the best systems for RPGs.

They've had their ups and downs on the console front, but the 3DS is the first indication of a real dearth on the handheld side. I mean, we'll undoubtedly get (yet another) Pokemon, but there's not much reason to rejoice besides that yet.

The DS didn't get its first RPGs until a year in, got some more two years in, but didn't really hit its stride until three years in.

Does Bravely Default: Flying Fairy count? I'm not sure it's "J" enough or not... but does seem to be an ok-looking RPG from Square Enix. Beyond the Labyrinth might also be worth looking into.

There are also Paper Mario and Kingdom Hearts games announced, along with Heroes of Ruin and Fire Emblem and a new Dragon Quest Monsters entry in the not too distant future - not sure any of those scratch the itch you are feeling though. (Some might not even be considered "real" RPGs, although I guess that distinction is best left up to the gamer.)

My personal take is that anyone looking for good RPGs in the first year or two of a consoles release is bound to be disappointed. Usually it takes at least a couple of years before the good ones come out, doesn't it? Until them I'm using my 3DS to catch up on DS RPGs - Dragon Quest, Radiant Historia, SMT, and Suikoden being the primary suspects.

Also... what's up with the "what do you expect from Nintendo" talk? Normally I find Racketboy to be one of the most intelligent and open communities on the web. Why does this type of bias come out so strongly whenever discussion turns to current consoles?

Edited to add Labyrinth, tighten up some text, and wonder about why current gen talk always seems to bring bias.

I didn't care for the MGS demo. I'll stick with RE:R and probably pick up Tales from the Abyss soon. Also is it dumb to want to spend the 5 bucks to get SMB on the 3ds? I own it so many times over already but yet I still want to get it for my 3ds.

I didn't spend anything to get it (bought in at that golden moment between the price drop and Ambassador Program to get the best of both worlds) but can say I really enjoy it.

It's a great pick-up-and-play title because I'm so familiar, and being able to drop in and out at any time is also nice. 10-15 runs through the game on a work break are rather relaxing.

Yeah, Pokemon games don't excite me much to be honest. They're not bad (I do own a couple), just not my thing. I guess I don't really think of Pokemon games as JRPGs, I tend to just think of them as, well.......... Pokemon games.

I'll be thrilled if the JRPG library of the 3DS ends up at large/awesome as that of the DS. All things considered, I think the DS has the second best RPG library of all time, right behind the SNES.

Snake Eater 3D is out??? I might actually pick a unit up just to play through it, but I dunno. There's almost nothing for the system that appeals to me, and it being region locked is a big deal breaker for me.
