I've recently noticed that my Saturn's disc drive is becoming increasingly louder. Compared to my friend's Saturn, it's much louder.
I've also noticed that it's taking a long time to load games that, only a month or so ago, loaded perfectly.
Why is this happening? It exacerbates every time I use it... I'm both annoyed and worried since it's a rather expensive Saturn with a 50/60 switch - not to mention that I'm useless when it comes to repairing anything electronical.
I'm worried about my poor, poor Saturn...

Now it's gone up the spout: on Shining Force 3 it's taking 20-30 seconds to load dialogue, and on Sonic Jam it's taking about a minute to load Sonic World; it's much louder now, too.
I know next to nothing when it comes to repairing electronial stuff, so I'm not gonna be able to fix it. Although, it shouldn't be hard to replace the disc drive with one out of another Saturn, should it?

Like all things mechanical (as in moving parts) they need servicing. Expecially at it's age. What I like to do (and have done with all my consoles + the ones I repair for the shop I work for) is to strip the drive down and get all the dust and old grease off. And re-lube the moving parts with a product called Tamiya ceramic grease. That stuff is magic!
Re: I'm worried about my poor, poor Saturn...
So if the solution to this is "old Saturn is old" why does my PS3 sound like it's grinding up my disks every time it reads?

Well by chance are you trying to use an imported Saturn?
Saturns DO NOT have multi region power supplies, and run a highly serious risk of dying from wrong input.

Obviously the laser is working too hard. The reason why could be a number of things. Required maintenance or improper power supply are a couple really likely ones. Imminent component failure is another one.
