Re: The Comic Book Thread
Interesting, I've been following Birds since the relaunch and I just recently starting reading Animal Man. I like both books so this change in artists is news to me. I hope it all works out. I suspected that Birds and Batman were having some kind of crossover. I'm glad this confirms it. I really wish I could read Batman # 6, but I haven't been able to go to the comic shop due to a recent health issueBurningDoom wrote:http://www.comiclist.com/index.php/news ... ing-in-may
Multiple DC titles get new artists beginning in May
Media Release -- Beginning with its ninth issue in May, RESURRECTION MAN will have a new artist: Jesus Saiz. Fresh from his run on BIRDS OF PREY, Saiz will pick up Mitch Shelley's story just in time to pit the indestructible man against the Suicide Squad. Shelley may be incapable of death – but the Squad's under orders from Amanda Waller, and "The Wall" is not one to accept excuses.
"Having Fernando leave the series is bittersweet, but gaining a talent such as Jesus will give RESURRECTION MAN a decidedly different look," said series editor Brian Cunningham. "His style brings a very iconic superhero look. His heroes are very heroic, his villains are as nasty as they come. I can't wait to get him started."
"I'm going to miss BIRDS OF PREY immensely, although it's also true that I was dying to work on the Dark line of books," said Saiz. "There's some very interesting stuff happening in these books, and I've always considered horror / creating dark settings are some of my stronger areas as an artist, and I really haven't had many chances to flex those muscles working in this genre during my career. So…I think I'm really going to enjoy working on RESURRECTION MAN! Crrrrazy fun!"
Saiz's first issue as RESURRECTION MAN's new artist will be #9, launching in May.
Earlier today, we announced that Jesus Saiz will be taking over the illustration duties on RESURRECTION MAN, kicking things off with a SUICIDE SQUAD crossover in issue 9. But what about Mitch Shelley's current artist, Ferndando Dagnino? He's not going far; in fact, he'll continue to put Shelley through the ringer as the new artist on SUICIDE SQUAD, where he'll remain at the crossover's conclusion.
"What's more fun: figuring out creative new ways to resurrect someone, or finding splat-tastic new ways to kill them?" said Pat McCallum, editor of SUICIDE SQUAD. "Fernando's gonna find out in a hurry. His style has just enough menace to keep the team looking dangerous, and he's joined at the perfect time to help with the heavy lifting: we got a lot of body bags to fill."
"Call me insensitive but I must admit I've really enjoyed killing Mitch twice or thrice per issue," said Dagnino. "Nevertheless, it all falls into place knowing that he will be in Jesus' hands now. This run on RESURRECTION MAN has REALLY been loads of fun but now I must confess I am even more excited to take over the responsibility of dealing with such a thrilling cast of characters as the SUICIDE SQUAD. Harley…I'm coming!"
With Jesus Saiz resurrected as Mitch Shelley's ongoing illustrator, the BIRDS OF PREY need an artist up to the challenge of depicting Gotham City's finest female fighters. Fresh from The Rot in ANIMAL MAN, artist Travel Foreman takes on urban decay alongside Black Canary, Batgirl, Katana, Poison Ivy and Starling. Beginning with issue #9 in May, the Birds face Talon and the Court of Owls in the epic "Night of the Owls" Bat-family crossover.
"ANIMAL MAN is one of my favorite books of The New 52, in no small part because of Travel's awesome art," said BIRDS OF PREY editor Bobbie Chase. "We're really challenging him to go against his animal instincts in his first issue; from the woods to the city streets, from a single super character (OK, with family) to a team book, from one small corner of the DC universe right into the big Bat landscape. It's going to be exciting!"
Travel Foreman will be moving on from Buddy Baker's ethereal adventures in The Rot, but ANIMAL MAN remains in good hands with artist Steve Pugh taking over illustration duties. Pugh is no stranger to Animal Man's adventures, having drawn an extensive run of the character's original series in the 1990s.
"For me, it's awesome to be returning to a book that was such a milestone in my creative life and with Jeff, a killer writer who's been punching ANIMAL MAN through the ceiling!" said Pugh. "Yeah, I was buying the book already but now I don't have to wait so long to find out what happens next!"
Pugh joins the Baker family full-time with ANIMAL MAN #9, in May.
I caught some of it. Seems like a good show for the true comic book fans out there. They sure do ramble on a lot. I'm not a big Kevin Smith fan, so I probably won't tune in regularly. Plus, even though I like comics, I don't think I'm a big enough comic book nerd to put this on my must see viewing listLuke wrote:Anyone else watch Comic Book Men last night?

Re: The Comic Book Thread
Finished Penguin Pride and Prejudice with issue # 5. The last issue was slightly disappointing in that it ended the story in rather predictable fashion, but at least it wrapped things up with no loose strings and the mini-series as a whole was excellent. This is a book where I feel that the art and the writing complemented each other perfectly. The visual style of this book really enhances the story and it's that perfect symbiosis that I think every comic book strives for.
I hope many other Bat fans have been picking this one up. I never thought a story about the Penguin could be so good. I think this may be looked back on in a few years as the definitive Penguin story. Would like to see this collected in a classy trade paperback with a hardcover and maybs some notes from the creative team. It deserves it

Here's a question, should I go ahead and pick this series up, or wait for the trade...Gamerforlife wrote:Finished Penguin Pride and Prejudice with issue # 5. Re: The Comic Book Thread
I thought it was enjoyable. It's not gonna change T.V. or comic fandom or anything. It's basically Pawn Stars, with more geek-oriented items and people involved. It kept me entertained, and I laughed a little. Someone that's not a real comic fan isn't gonna enjoy it, though, I'm sure.Luke wrote:Anyone else watch Comic Book Men last night?

Re: The Comic Book Thread
Well, you can get all five issues for a little under twenty dollars. I don't know what a trade will cost, if they do release one. It's up to you. I really enjoyed it though so I'm glad I got the issues. If they do release a trade I might grab that too. The story does a nice job of showing Penguin's history in this New 52 universe and really shows what his character is all about.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Here's a question, should I go ahead and pick this series up, or wait for the trade...Gamerforlife wrote:Finished Penguin Pride and Prejudice with issue # 5. When they talked comics it was fun, but that whole selling stuff competition was just asinine.
I didnt mind the pawn star stuff cause some of it was genuinely cool. I would love that thor poster.

Re: The Comic Book Thread

How cool is that cover?
This thing is awesome! I picked it up at a local used book shop for a just a couple bucks. Yeah, it's completely out of date, but I'm fan of Wizard Magazine (or at least the Wizard of old, the last few years there were atrocious).
Dang am I glad I did. This is the coolest formatted price guide I've seen. Overstreet may be the standard, but Wizard is the most fun! It was perfect for new fans and old fans alike. It had guides for all thing involved with collecting. Those features keep you entertained for hours. Unfortunately, I didn't get the 4 free X-Men cards, they were long gone.
It had a guide for:
-The History of Comic Fandom & The Industry
-A Comic History Timeline
-The Anatomy of a Comic Book (the different parts of a comic and terminology)
-Comic Book Grading Guide
-Comic Book Collectibles Guide
-Buying and Selling Comic Books
-Profiles of Comic Book Publishers
-A List of the Most Valuable Comics
-A List of Famous Characters First Appearances
-A List of Writers & Artists First Books
-A List of Publishers First Books
-Guide to Storing Comics
-Guide to Restoring Comics
Plus it had the normal stuff Overstreet has like the actual price guide with a much more complete listing than you'd see in their monthly issues, a classic comic cover gallery, a modern comic cover gallery, and ads for major comic shops across the nation.
I so wish they kept printing these every year. I would much rather have this than the standard Overstreet Price Guide that doesn't offer all the extras that this Wizard one does. Far as I know, the 1995 one I'm talking about, that pictured above, is the first one. And the last one was the very next year's release in 1996 seen below:
