just depends. But I Get what you're saying: the word "normal" kind of means it should have been the default setting.

But like right now I'm playing through Sonic Racing. The default is Beginner, then there's um... Advanced and Expert (I think?) after that. So yeah, I'm playing through Beginner trying to get 1st place in every cup. And I'll call the game beaten after that, knowing that I'll later want to beat it on the next difficulty levels as well.

For what it's worth, I always play through racers on easy first because it just seems like the right thing to do, working your way up through the difficulties. For other genres though, I'd tend to set it to normal for my first play through. The only exception I can think of is Viewtiful Joe, where I set it to Kids (easy) because 1.That was it's default, and 2. Adults (normal) was damn hard.

FWIW, i really hated WL2 and found it to be slow and boring with way too much backtracking, but i really enjoyed WL3. WL1 is also excellent (as good as VB WL).

It's good to know I'm not the only one. I'll probably check out 1 and 3 sometime. One bad game isnt enough to put me off giving the rest a go.

I've only played 2 and 4. I'm not interested in 1, and 3 seems to elude my grasp.

I think 1 mostly sucks. I liked 2 better. But 3 is great. 4 was weird. I enjoyed looking at it more than actually playing it.

I only play racing games on the easiest difficulty, and only then for completionist's sake. So with Wipeout: Pure, I have all the Vector speed medals, but I'm still working on the other 4 speeds and I won't consider the game "beaten" until I've completed it.

1. Sonic CD (PSN)
2. Golden Axe Warrior (PS3)
3. Ico (PS3)
4. BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger (PS3)
5. 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)
6. SoulBlade (PS1)
7. SoulCalibur II (PS2)
8. The Simpsons Arcade Game (PS3)
9. Sonic Sega All-Stars Racing (PS3)

Sega All-Stars is a phenomenal kart-racer. In many ways it has now surpassed Double Dash as my favorite. I'm really glad I took a chance on this one -- something I only did because of the high quality of Sonic Generations. For the same reason I had picked up Sega All-Star Tennis, which was nothing to write home about. But this. Wow. I had initially been playing random tracks with my wife, who after an afternoon said that it was now her favorite racing game as well. Over the past two nights I made it a point to beat all of the cups in first place (started at Beginner: the default setting). And yeah. I just loved it. The HD looks incredible. The fan-service is great. The speed is way the hell up there. The controls are tight. And the tracks... the range from fun to brutal, but they're all well designed. Not only do I now have Advanced and Expert modes to play through in the future, but there is apparently tons of unlockables that you can earn with mileage -- even more incentive to keep playing. I urge all you Sega and arcade racing fans to grab this (on PS3) so we can play online together! :D

10. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock (PS3)

Possibly the only time I've ever beaten a game because I hated it and didn't want to give it the satisfaction of beating me. My wife and I played through this over the course of three weekends. Compared to previous GH games, it's a piece of shit. There are baffling inclusions (you play guitar to the piano parts of "Bohemina Rhapsody"!) and a completely terrible selection of songs that I feel like would appeal to no particular audience. A lot of the songs are so badly programmed, that you have to try to NOT listen to the rhythm so as to play the song right. Neversoft's suites of Rush and Megadeth have also made me believe that they are sadistic assholes. Fuck you Warriors of Rock.
