There's always the DOS version, for nostalgia's sake.

I actually really like the NES version of Monopoly. Was going through all the NES games on DC Nester one night and came across it and decided to give it a go. A couple hours later, I was still playing the damn thing and had to add it to my wanted list of NES games. Very addictive, even by yourself

I had a PS2 copy for some reason about 5 years ago. I was living with a guy who was a little bit unstable and had issues with explosive anger. He would play this game against the computer whilst I would sit in the same room, probably smoking and reading. He would crow about how awesome he was at Monopoly, constantly kicking the computer's ass. I would reply that Monopoly is a game of luck, and he might as well get puffed up about winning a coin toss, an argument he strongly disagreed with.

I eventually agreed to play a round with him, so he could try out his new found skills on a human opponent. I proceeded to roll the digital dice and brutally lay the smack down against him, relishing every moment of it. He, naturally, got really angry at me and insisted that my beating him was all down to luck. That is the only time I ever played digital Monopoly. And I maintain it is a game of luck, digital or otherwise.

I am not therefore unqualified to answer your question, but I hope you enjoyed my anecdote.

This. There was nothing better than the going to jail, then when you got out you hear "Don't be comin' back now", then monopoly guy brushes himself off, and walks of with this 8-bit noise. Always made me laugh.

Genesis Monopoly, no question! Although I'm pretty sure it may just be a 16-bit port of the NES game.
Regardless, they both trump the slow and cumbersome PSone version. Fast dice rolls and board movement, as well as easy trading and inventory access.

^agree with you, i have play newer version such as the one on the wii, while its not bad it just felt too cramp and slower. I suggest you try the Snes or Genesis version because the interface is simple and easy to see and management is great.

^ from my experience most games seems to be more vibrant, whereas snes games to me seems water down in terms of color.

The Genesis pic looks like its on a emulator, while the SNES one has scanlines, also the SNES version has more shades of colors, while the Genesis version has more solid colors.

That was one of the issues I was having with the SNES version.

The movement of the pieces took forever and there was no way to speed past it to just get to the block I had rolled to.

I will agree with the bit of luck and I've also noticed that some versions (gamecube Monopoly Party especially) would have the computer cheat to keep the game going.

Once I was playing, I had hotels lined up on either side of Free Parking and along comes the computer. He's down on his luck, nothing to show for. A rent on one of my properties would end the game. I had set the Free Parking square to awarded 1000 dollars to anyone who landed on it. He was like four spaces away. FOUR! Guess what he rolled? A FOUR!! Missing my first line of hotels completely and awarding him $1000.

Now granted, at this point, I had owned pretty much the entire board and he ended up going bankrupt on another property. But still.

Stupid cheating computer.
