The only 5 I've played in order of awesomeness

Contra (Famicom)
Contra Hard Corps (Genesis) Absolutely loved the music in that game! Amazing graphics and grittier style.
Contra 3 (SNES) Amazing graphics
Contra 4 (NDS) A lot like Contra 3, very nice
Contra 2 (NES) I played it
I like old games
I like new games

Contra: Hard Corps - The most intense and the best
Contra 4 - Started off boring (For a Contra game) but it got better
Contra - played this many times on X-box live arcade

I haven't played the other ones enough to get a good opinion on them but I'm pretty sure the other two would be Super Contra and Contra III

Contra (NES) - Better than the arcade original.
Contra 3 (SNES) - If those overhead stages had easier controls, or were taken out, it may have taken top marks. They just did not click my brother or myself because of those.
Super C (NES) - It is the step between in every aspect.
Operation C (GB) - Introduces Homing weapons and was the best run and gun on the system until the port of Contra 3.
Contra 4 (DS) - I havent even played it and I know it is better than some most of the others

I haven't played Shattered Soldier yet, but I imagine it fits in here somewhere.

1. Hard Corps - multiple paths, multiple weapons, multiple fun bosses, multiple sliding, no overhead stages
2. Super C - great game, overhead stages are like Commando
3. The Alien Wars - good game, overhead stages kill any momentum for me
4. Contra 4 - okay, not enough fun, 2-screen design flaws, not big or crazy enough
5. Operation C - good game but doesn't hold up well for me without nostalgia

Would it be considered blasphemous if I were to mention 'Shattered Soldier' on a retro gaming site? The game is absurdly difficult, eye bleedingly so, but the ludicrous plot more than makes up for that. There too, is a nice little twist for all the retro gamers that play.

1. Contra 3 aka Super Probotector
An absolutely amazing game. Stunning visuals for the time and some excellent level design make for my favourite Contra game ever.

2. Contra 4
A real return to the roots of the Contra games. One of the best DS games ever IMO.

3. Shattered Soldier
A lot of people don't like this game and I can't think why. It has all the staples of classic Contra games but with updated visuals. Some of the mechanics of this game are cool too, like being able to lock your firing position.

4. Contra Advance
This is the GBA Contra game. It's almost a port of Contra 3 but not quite. Some levels are different and you can't acquire two weapons anymore. Still a good Contra game though, plus a bonus is the portability factor.

5. Super Contra
Might be getting old these days but it's still good fun nonetheless.

Not at all -- I expected to see it here.

I really want to play this game...I think some people were put off by the visuals? I don't know, the gameplay looks great to me.

This locking mechanic you speak of, is that like in Hard Corps where you can choose to stand in one position and fire all around? I love having that choice...Gunstar Heroes is brutal that way becuase you have to choose one or the other.

Is Shattered Soldier the 2d style side scrolling polygon one on PS2?

I heard that one is phenominal!
