Help with SNES SCART for PVM

Post by daskrabs »

I have a Sony PVM-3230 and an NTSC SNES v1. I bought a SNES SCART cable from eBay. It works, but the colors were washed out/dull and it was way too bright. The seller bought the cable from someone else, so was useless in support. I tried to rewire it according to this:

This meant replacing a 75 ohm resistor on the +5 with a 180. This helped the over-brightness, but not the color. Thinking about removing the 220 caps.

Does anyone have a SNES/N64 SCART cable that they're using on a PVM and can share how it's wired?

Did you get a SCART cable for the SNES or GameCube? If you have an NTSC system you need to get a GameCube RGB cable, which has the 220 uF caps but no resistors.

SNES. I'll pull the resistor and give it a go.

Having just the caps on the RGB lines with no resistors got me nowhere. I pulled all of the resistors and caps hoping that a straight-thru connection would get me there, but the colors are still dull. The only things I haven't checked are the ground, and having a resistor on the +5 line. Are either of these sympomatic of dull colors?

I would try checking the ground lines, it could be that your RGB lines aren't properly grounded which can cause video issues. Not sure about the resistor, but 5V is used for RGB auto-switching on European TVs with SCART, so that wouldn't really affect anything on your PVM.

My ntsc snes without the caps looked the same but I got buzzing in the audio.

Got it working. The proper setup for PVM is 220 caps on the RGB lines, and everything else (+5, ground, left and right audio, csync) straight thru. Also, either CSYNC or composite video should work as the sync signal.
