S-video to Component converter

Post by Coligion »

I purchased a Panasonic GT30 plasma set last year that did not come with an s-video input. Sadly, most all new TVs are void of this input, so I basically conceded the fact. Anyway, it's almost a year later now, and I'm still trying to find a way to deal with this. I love playing Neo Geo, Saturn, and Dreamcast, but I am relegated to a composite connection (sans the Dreamcast--VGA box 8)). My old plasma set had an s-video input, and I was quite satisfied with how the games looked compared to composite. I've done a lot of reading about tapping the RGB signals from these systems, but I was curious what my luck would be with something like this:

http://www.svideo.com/svc2ypbpr.html -- s-video to component

How well would a device like this retain the s-video quality boost? Like I said above, I know RGB is the best, but s-video always looked quite a bit better than composite. So, if this could effectively give me an "s-video quality" image, I would be content.

Aside from my s-video quality question, I'm assuming I'd still run into problems with the 240p content properly displaying via component with this device? Meaning, it would be up to my TV to decide if it can properly output the video getting converted?

Input is much appreciated :D.

I'm no expert, but you can't get blood from a turnip. Cheap "magic boxes" usally just pass the signal through, basic upscan, and it looks like ass. For $200 I can see the box mentioned above striping the signals to get a clean RGB and even component output. XRGB is the same but more adjustment funtions.

Gamesx.com has good info on all this.

Back to the age old discussion of what to play retro consoles on. End of the day, a Goodwill/flea market/garage sale CRT for $20 is my recomendation.

I had a similar problem, my HDTV didn't have s-video and composite looked like pure poop. What I ended up doing was buying an RGB Scart to Component transcoder and started using RGB cables for all of my consoles.

If you have a Wii and a component cable for it you can pretty easily test if your TV handles 240p. Just set the Wii to 480i and play a Virtual Console game. Wii outputs 240p on VC games if the console is set to 480i (if the console is set to 480p, it just upscales the 240p to that).
