Would Guardian Heroes apply? I know it's mostly a hack n' slash/ beat-em-up game, but there is a leveling system.
On that note, I also wonder about River City Ransom.

I don't think there's a strong enough rpg element to Guardian Heroes. I mean you can increase a characters stats over the course of the game, but that's pretty much it as far as rpg elements. There are no upgrades, abilities, etc. Aside from the stat thing, it's pretty much just a standard beat'em up. Compare that to Return of the King, which I picked for this thread, and you can use experience points to get upgrades, new abilities, new combo moves, health boosts, damage boosts, etc. I know Return of the King can be classified as a hack and slash game and it is at its core, but it has a much more robust, leveling/upgrade system than is required of a standard beat'em up or hack and slash game, which is why I thought it qualified for this thread.

Plus, there are different objectives in the various stages that go outside of just beating up every enemy, like knocking off ladders to protect a castle, escaping a cave in, protecting NPCs, or using a cloak ability to sneak past enemies. There's more going on in that game than a standard hack and slasher. Just my opinion though.

I would like to nominate the X-Men Legend series. It's two games, but I don't think we need two slots if we just add it to the list as one series

Guardian Heroes is more linear than River City Ransom, but I could see either of them being Action-Adventure/Action-RPG games. Primarily of course, they are beat'em ups, but they have plenty of RPG elements. RCR offers more customization, but little characterization. You can obtain special attacks, improve your character, and solve puzzles (avoiding giant pit and finding the Four Bosses). GH is linear (and many RPGs are), but offers a branching story and more fleshed out characters. The only upgrades you get are level-dependent on your stats (most visible is Nicole), but your character does improve and you have to adapt to said improvements.

Are we still keeping a list up? How about the SUPER CHINESE series? (Which I think is even on XBL.)

I wanted that game for so long. I finally got it, and I haven't finished it yet. It's brutally difficult, and you have to grind for so long to get anywhere.

Ack probably has some good tips. I remember him playing through that game and finishing it and he seemed to enjoy it. I played some of it years ago and I had fun, but didn't get that far as I hadn't fully committed to the game and had other things in my backlog

I've had so much fun playing this game, whether it was solo or with some old friends, one of whom borrowed it to play with his secret crush who had friend zoned him eons ago and I never got it back
