How good are the sequels to 80s classics?

Post by Erik_Twice »

As with anything popular, most 80's classics had a sequel realized, often just a year or two before the game was released. Others would see updated remakes for several years, most forgotten, while the original still stands.

So, what sequels do you think are worth checking our or better than the original?

- Millipede looks incredibly hard. It seems to have more variety, which is always great, but there's so much stuff going on it looks very intimidating to someone who can't even play the original for five minutes. It also makes me wonder if Gaplus (Sequel to Galaga, itself a sequel to Galaxian) is a notably better game than Galaga even if the difficulty is way higher.

- Gauntlet II seems to have better level design than the original, but I can only get across the first nine levels in both so I really don't know. I heard Gauntlet IV for the Megadrive is amazing (at least the soundtrack is) but I have never played it nor it is very well known. I haven't played the 3D Gauntlet games.

-Spy Hunter II doesn't look exactly fun compared to the original. I tried it for five minutes before giving up.

Those are the games that come to my mind.

On the arcade side, don't also forget Jr. Pac-Man (which is hard as absolute shit and deserves to die in a fire) and Baby Pac-Man (which is a combo Pac-Man and pinball game that is really pretty fun).

Some other sequels:

-BurgerTime: World Tour (PSN, WiiWare, XBLA)
Other versions of BurgerTime available, but this one is fairly new (released last week on WiiWare) and is in full 3D. Apparently, it's pretty fun too.

-Centipede: Infestation (3DS, Wii)
3D reimagining of Centipede that was released a couple months ago.

-Donkey Kong 3 (Arcade, NES, PC-88, FM-7, e-Reader, Wii VC)
This game is full of why.

-Galaga '88 (Arcade, PC-Engine, Game Gear, Wii VC [JP])
There are other Galaga versions, but this is the one most worth mentioning.

-Q*Bert's Qubes (2600, ColecoVision) and Q*bert 3 (SNES)
I...guess they're new Q*Berts? I dunno.
Gaming accomplishments:

Donkey Kong: 423,100 [L12-1] (150th place as of 2019-01-15)
Super Smash Bros. (N64): Ranked top 5 in Wisconsin from Q1 2016 to Q2 2017
Shrek SuperSlam: won largest tournament in game's history (Shrekfest 2018)

I'd be interested to hear thoughts on this game, simply because WayForward made it.

I haven't played it, but I do have two Centipede: Infestation headbands. :P

Interesting. I know a guy who would say the exact opposite.

You ever play "Galaga Arrangement" on the Namco Museum (PS2, Xbox, GC) release? I think it's very underrated

Gauntlet II is leaps and bounds better, but still has some issues with four players getting stuck in the stages.

Gauntlet Legends (the first 3d one) had some odd bugs in the arcade. BUT this was fixed in Gauntlet Dark Legacy which contains almost the entire game of Legends, with more stages and classes. It is the best 3d Gauntlet period. Seven Sorrows was such a disappointment. It is really pretty but is just so lacking and boring. Gauntlet games should be over the top, not boring.

The descent of Gauntlet Legends is Skylanders, but we have a topic for how awesome that is.

If I could only own two Gauntlets it would be Gauntlet 2 on the NES and Dark Legacy on the Xbox (PS2 version had bad slowdown in 4 player and the Cube one likes to glitch with bosses). Thankfully that is not the case and I can own almost all of them...

It is not as cool, but the much later sequel/reboot is quite a bit of fun.
