Games Beaten 2012
Re: Games Beaten 2012
Just finished Kingdom of Amalur. Not sure what I'll go for next. Probably try and go through Catherine, and I am planning on snapping up Asura's Wrath next week, so maybe that too?

I love the Ace Attorney franchise, and until recently I had played the first and second phoenix wright games, aswell as Apollo Justice and Miles Edgeworth. Needless to say, I was pretty excited when I found the only western release of the series I had yet to play for quite cheap (around £11). I'd heard it was the best in the series, and I can see why people say that. The story is awesome, especially the final case. Lots of appearances of characters from previous games, and a plot that ties together events from the old games with this one makes for a pretty exciting game that keeps you playing. Whilst I'm not sure it's my favourite in the series (that title might go to the controversial AAI: Miles Edgeworth), it probably has the best plot. I'm really happy to finally beat the game and the series, and a little sad there arent any more for me to play right now. Now I just need to buy Justice for All to get the full set.
StarTropics on the other hand was a game that I did not enjoy. It's full of horrible mechanics and contains moments of unfair design which I found annoying. The movement scheme of the game is horrible. It;s based on a grid system, which is fine, but it has a second of lag every time you change direction before you start moving, making accurately moving a dodging a pain, and making a simple task like walking a diagonal path (comprised of alternating vertical and horizontal blocks) a tedious nightmare. It contained annoying traps I consider unfair, as there was no way to anticipate them, such as stairs which lead back to the dungeons entrance rather than the exit, and stepping stones over water that lead off the egde of the screen , and, when the screens scrolls along (like in zelda) lead into nothingness, forcing you to fall into the water and die instantly. You could power up your yoyo in range and attack strength, but it relied on keeping your hearts high, often meaning you were basically screwed after one or two hits, even when you had a huge health bar. There were things I liked about the game - the music was kinda fun, the bosses were pretty cool for the most part and there were a couple of silly jokes that made me laugh, but for the most part, It's not a game I'd recommend. Also, the ending came out of nowhere. The look of bemused confusion on my face when it played must have been priceless.
Faselei was a game I'd tried before and not found very interesting. I decided to give it a second chance and found myself getting caught up and enjoying myself. It's a fun little strategy RPG game, though not worthy of the praise heaped upon it, which is likely due to it being in an under-represented genre on a niche system. However, it is pretty good enjoyable, and I liked the chip system used in the games battles. You can line up a set of computer chips which control your mech's movements, attacks, defense techniques and more, and they will be acted out turn by turn before you choose your next set. Whilst these are carried out, opponents mechs will do the same, meaning you have to anticipate which way they will move turn and fire to get the best position offensively and defensively to win the battle. The story in the game is not as bad as I expected, but it is pretty weak, suffering from the usual SNK bad translation. On the other hand, for SNK, this is actually a pretty solid translation, with less mis-spellings and grammar errors than usual. It seems like pretty standard anime mech affair, but it keeps the game moving ok. The game is pretty short, at 13 missions long plus 11 bonus tasks which are basically just 'kill 5 robots in a level you've been in before', but it took me about 5 or 6 hours to get through, not including replaying some of the longer, harder missions. There were some rough mechanics, such as limited ammo capacity often screwing you over on the longer later missions, but overall I feel it's worth a play.
I wonder if anyone ever reads these. They're a bit long and rambly

I do. In fact I tend to skip over posts that are just a list of games with no paragraph of thoughts at the end.alienjesus wrote: I wonder if anyone ever reads these. They're a bit long and rambly

Re: Games Beaten 2012
that is awesome. I feel good about my 8 so far. If I kept up that average I could hit 50 for the year. (Beat 40 last year, and 17 the year before).
Re: Games Beaten 2012
Yeah, that's pretty nuts. A lot of decently-long games too!alienjesus wrote:Well, that's good to know! I dont feel like I'm wasting time now![]()

Apparently I can't count, because there's only 20 games on that list. I'm still happy with that though.dsheinem wrote:Yeah, that's pretty nuts. A lot of decently-long games too!alienjesus wrote:Well, that's good to know! I dont feel like I'm wasting time now![]()

All Games:
Total for 2012: 9
The Secret of Grisly Manor - iOS
A fun and short little first person adventure game, I found some of the puzzles fairly clever, I got it for free, and I think that is about what it is worth, due to its length.
Duke Nukem Forver - The Doctor Who Cloned Me - PC
The campaign DLC for DNF was fairly average, the idea of Doctor Proton (The original enemy for Duke Nukem) returning was a great idea, however his animation and a lot of the game feels very low budget. I enjoyed it about the same as I did the main game, which is pretty average but not as bad as people make out.
The final boss was a massive let down, considering how much slack the game got for its driving scenes there are a lot in the game, and the final boss is a driving scene.

I just started playing Duke Nukem Forever. I also think it is a very average game that was treated like it is garbage. It's actually kind of fun, just nothing special. It's weird though. All of the humor and gameplay feels pretty dated, though the graphics are modern. It makes Duke feel kind of like a has-been, even though the game attempts to make him out as the coolest guy ever. If I still feel like playing more after the main campaign, I might consider the DLC, but I doubt I'll want to play much more after that.
