Sounds like Puget Sound Energy is as terrible as Seattle City Light.

I thought big companies like Valve had generators and/or servers in various geographic locations...

All my friends with Steam need to be connected at all times when playing. Never seen anyone playing it w/out a connection.

I do it all the time. In fact, I make sure to turn off the internet before I play because Steam uses less system resources when it's offline.

You only need to be online if you are using the online features of Steam (chat, multiplayer, purchasing, etc.) or if you are doing things that require access to your online account (cloud saves, achievements, stat tracking, etc.). Other than that, I think Steam requires the occassional account check in, but it's so infrequent and in the background that I never even notice it.
