A Question About Monster Hunter

Post by DomitorInvictus »

Are they worth playing solo? How much of the game will I be missing if I don't have online/buds to play with?

I have satellite internet, and no one I know of plays Monster Hunter.

I'd like to get into the games, they seem to fit my tastes really well, but I don't know if I will be missing out on too much if I don't have co-op.

I played Monster Hunter Tri solo, and it was still quite enjoyable. I imagine multiplayer is even better though.

From what I've experienced playing the MH games is they are still extremely fun to play solo, though, it may be harder to take down the monsters later on in the game without help from others. Maybe Tri has some sort of scaling feature I'm unaware of. Though I must ask: You have satellite internet, how come you can't play online?

Well, if you do decide to play, I hear that GameFAQs comminity is still pretty active.

Satellite internet has terrible latency, which can severely impact its viability for online gaming.

Tri does have scaling if you go multiplayer, not sure on other versions, but the PSP ones only technically have adhoc play anyway.

From what I've played of Freedom Unite, I'd say you can at least do a lot of the game solo.

I generally describe it like this:

Monster Hunter without online play is a good game.
Monster Hunter with online play is an excellent game.

If you just want to dive in and give the Monster Hunter formula a spin, you'll enjoy yourself. There are special bosses and event quests and items that you'll only be able to access online (depending on the game). In Monster Hunter Tri for example, there are 3 additional online exclusive monsters, as well as a whole tier of upper rank versions of monsters that give armor with different attributes later in the game. In the PSP games, there are much fewer differences between on and offline in terms of content (because technically they're just ad hoc). I probably wouldn't suggest the PSP games for a first timer though, I'm a big fan of the series and the PSP games still don't really appeal to me because of their feel (small screen, iffy controls, absurd hitboxes). Monster Hunter Tri is really great, and you can easily have fun with it offline. The one real downside is that you will be missing a lot of online content, but none of that is necessary to beat the standard campaign.

It's worth pointing out that it's a pretty long game even without online. I must've put about 40-50 hours into single player at least, and I could have easily put it more.
