I played Ico for about 3 hours and was enjoying it but then those Ghost things kept taking the girl and the screen did that crazy effect when you lose. I got frustrated and could never make myself return to it. Its like I know its good but I couldnt bring myself to finish it.
I would recomend Shadow of the Collosus for sure. One of the best games I have ever played. I cant wait to see what team Ico comes out with next.
You know it's never too late to rescue her. Even when they're pulling her into the ground you can grab her hand and pull her out. I loved that actually, very dramatic and suspenseful. Shadow of the Colossus seems to get all the attention it seems, because it's less subtle than Ico I think. It does deserve to be in this topic though.
I noticed that licensed games get no love in topics like this, so I want to mention a few must play licensed games that really stand out as examples of how all licensed games should be done.
Peter Jackson's King Kong
Just a five star game all around, damn near perfect in every way. Frankly, it's tells a better story than the movie did. That's right, it doesn't just capture the feel of the movie, it betters it. The gameplay is excellent and pretty realistic as well(no health bar, no cross hairs, your character is easy to kill too). Plus, the way the characters talk and interact with you really draws you into the game. The food chain system makes the dinosaurs a little more realistic and the T-Rex encounters actually rival the ones in Dino Crisis and the original Tomb Raider. The Kong levels really capture his size and power as well. It's a Michel Ancel game, one of my fave designers
The Adventures of Batman and Robin(S-NES)
Captures everything that makes the cartoon and Batman in general, so awesome. The gameplay has you doing all the things that make Bats cool and the levels mimic episodes from the show. The graphics in particular are absolutely beautiful. Looks EXACTLY like the show. Right up there with games like Comix Zone, Aladdin and Earthworm Jim for its beautiful cartoon look
Lord of the Rings: Return of the king
With all the money that went into this title, it obviously has the look and sound of the movie. There was some really brilliant ideas in the gameplay department. Parrying allows you to deflect ALL incoming attacks with your weapons, including incoming arrows. Combine this with a variety of combos, TONS of enemies in some levels, Legalous ability to fire off arrows quickly in succession, and Bane moves(which are enemy specific fatalities) and the combat looks pretty much just as badass as the movie. Another great feature is the number of environmental objects you can use against your enemies setting up some truly awesome looking kills(like dropping a huge chandelier on a room full of enemies). The level events and objectives follow the events of the movie pretty well too. Just plain awesome
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
A bit frustratingly hard, but this game pretty much gives you everything that makes the Hulk the Hulk. TONs of destructive, powerful moves and combos and lots of stuff to destroy. There are some insane things Hulk can do in this game that can really make your jaw hit the floor like throwing tanks, using missile launchers as weapons, doing an elbow drop off a building, I mean it's just plain insane what this game lets you do
Spider-man(Playstation 1)
There have been quite a few good Spidey titles over the years, but the awesomeness really began with this game. And although the graphics are dated now, it is in every other way a definitive Spider-Man game. The funny dialog is there, the gameplay has you doing everything that Spider-Man is known for, the cheesy tv show theme is there and you've even got Stan Lee doing a little in game narration. Other Spider-Man games I've played managed to screw up something or other, but this one had it all down.
