So... Dissidia 012....

Post by sabrage »

Picked this game up yesterday because the battle system looked fun. And it is, but...

I've only ever played Final Fantasy VII, VII and X, so I wasn't really prepared for all the fanservice going on. Furthermore, I have no idea what the hell is going on! It's been years since I really played any games in this series. I feel like I need to brush up before attempting to play again. I thought that this game was a prequel to the original, but there's no exposition at all.. It pretty much just dumps you into the story with no explanation of what's happening. Am I missing something?

Well, I've been looking for an excuse to play these games anyways. I was thinking about starting with IX on PSN, or should I go for VI?

Edit: Oh, and what does the save game import from the original Dissidia get you? I might download a save game if it's items or bonus content.

VI is by far my favorite, with IV right behind it. I think they still hold up. I would suggest getting VI on the GBA and play it on the cube. The PSP version of IV is great as well and comes with the extra chapters. I think you can find it under $15 used.

Ooh, IX is my personal favorite so I say go with that, but I admit that makes me kind of biased.

VI is fantastic though. I don't think you can go wrong with either one honestly.

As for Dissidia, I don't know what to say. I excitedly bought the original when it first came out, but it left me really cold, so I stayed away from the prequel.

I will say though that it struck me as nonsensical anyway, so I don't think you're missing all that much. It felt to me like they were just making the characters go through the same development they'd already had in their own games (For instance, Cloud is depressed and confused, as usual).

Ya I think it is purely a fan service type of game. Some love it, some hate it. IX is my favorite PS1 FF

Good call on the GBA version. I was originally planning on getting FFIII on the SNES but I've found that if I can take an RPG with me on the bus or in the waiting room I'm far, far more likely to finish it. Plus I just bought a GB Player! I've got the other two PS1 Final Fantasys on disk so I might as well look for a physical copy of the third as well. It's less expensive than I thought it would be. (though why is the GBA version of VI the same price as the SNES one? That's insanity)

Ya it came out near the end of the GBAs life and is a popular game. So it is relatively tough to find. I would definitely look at getting IV as well on the PSP. It retains the hand drawn sprite SNES look but with a new coat of paint. I enjoyed the DS version, but some hate it due to the polygon graphics.

My DS has kind of worn out its welcome. The touchscreen is only fun in games like Trauma Center, and that's basically the antithesis of a portable game. Plus the dual screens ruined Contra 4 for me

It at least looked better than FF3 on DS.

Not by much granted, but I'm also not a fan of the somewhat deformed style.

Eh I dont think I ever use the touch screen to be honest. Most of the RPGs I play on it work well with the dpad and face buttons

Yeah, it's got a great RPG library, but for whatever reason I can't get excited about my DS anymore. My PSP is new and shiny and that screen... I'm gonna put Dissidia 012 on the backburner and I'll keep an eye on prices for IV, VI and IX while I'm playing through Persona.
