Super Robot Wars

Post by Prof. Bars »

I was just curious if anyone has or is playing any games in the SRW series.

For the uninformed, Super Robot Wars is a Strategy RPG series featuring many different giant robot anime all in one place. Gundam, Macross, Eva, Voltron, Mazinger, Getter... Almost all of them have been in this game. Because of it being a SRPG, it's rather easy to play, even if you have no clue how to read Japanese.

I believe it's been around since the early 90's. It's been on the GB, NES, SNES, Sat, PS1/2, WS, DC, GBA, DS, and PSP.

Here's a small preview of the latest game. It's the second part of the sequel to a game on the PS2. The sequel was split in two full games for the PSP. Main series getting added to this game are the recent Gurren Lagaan movie, Gundam 00 Season 2, Code Geass R2, Tetsujin 28, and Macross 7.

Personally, I've been playing this one. It's the sequel to one of the old games for the SNES. It only has original characters from SRW in it, and deals with mechs that are powered by elemental spirits.

very few of these were released in the US. I believe it was the Taisen series.

there may be some copyright restrictions here. Certain characters are owned by different companies here in the US than in Japan.

thats why we didnt get these in the US.

I've seen some vids/screenshots before too.

It would have been awesome to get these games in english original.

I guess emulated is fine.

Glad to see another passionate fan here on racketboy.

Yeah. We've only gotten the two Original Generation games for the Game Boy Advance, and a small crossover turn based RPG called Endless Frontier, which has Namco x Capcom characters along with Xenosaga.

Atlus localized all three games for us, but it seems they're pretending the series doesn't exist anymore, because we haven't gotten the PS2 OG games, the Endless Frontier sequel, or any of the Masou Kishin games which all have original characters in it.

Unless more of the games get fan translated, there's really no way to play the games in english anymore.

It's Fanservice. Mainly in the Smash Bros. nostalgia-sense, but also in the TNA when the latest versions show the pilots' reactions before and after the mechs go toe to toe.

I've emulated the GB and SFC titles. My friend imported some of them for SFC and PSX. They are strategy and tactics games at heart, so any arm-chair general can take control pretty easily. The fun comes from identifying which episode they're showing off and how characters from different series interact. (Shinji from Evangelion is the universal whipping boy.)
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

Played Super Robot Wars Alpha (PSX), Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 (PS2) and 3rd Super Robot Wars (SNES). I loved the series, and I'm not even a big mecha fan. I am a pretty big Strategy game fan, though.

Not entirely true. There is an associated fighting game on the N64, but it sold poorly. It is called Super Robot Spirits.

Super Robot Taisen thread? Hell yes. SRW is one of my favorite franchises ever probably, I own nearly every one of them and have finished a good deal of them. I would like to own every single release but some of the Wonderswan Color titles are extremely expensive. Right now I'm playing through Alpha 2 as I wait for Z2-2 (the PV was amazing).

Are you playing through one right now?

Did you play the original Masoukishin? It's one of my favorite SRW games but I was a little let down by the sequel. I quite enjoyed it, but I feel like the first game was stronger overall. Lemme know if you have any route questions or anything like that, I pretty much covered everything in the game.

There's also another series called The Great Battle, which are mostly a series of beat-em-ups, featuring Gundam, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman. It's the first game featuring Fighter Roar, who is in OG Gaiden.

I ponied up the cash for the limited edition of Masou Kishin II, so I got a remade copy of the DS Masou Kishin for PSP, with added voice acting. I did play the original SNES for a little bit, but stopped in hopes the translation patch would be finished. That never happened.

I do have a question, actually. I just started Masou Kishin II, and I think I want to take the Yang Long route. What I'm guessing to do that, according to Google Translate, is to avoid having Precia and Wolf fight in chapter 8, and go South after Chapter 12?

While not a part of SRW, ACE is the place for crossover mecha action gaming.

If you want to avoid the Presia route, the general rule of thumb is to just not do anything with her. More specifically, don't have her attack anyone (especially Wolf) in stage 7 or 8, and don't attack Eran with her in stage 15. Do that and chose to go south when asked and you'll be good. Thankfully the scenario chart for Masou II isn't nearly as convoluted as it is in Masou I.

Also good choice with the Yan Long route, has the coolest route-specific recruits and the best final scenarios.

Well, until ACE R came out... but yeah the ACE 2 and 3 are awesome. Haven't played the PSP one yet.
