I really want to take the plunge into PC adventure games sometime, and maybe soon since I have some money again to spend at GoG, lol. Any fans of the Syberia game here? Granted maybe I should just jump into Myst or something, but yeah the Syberia games have always looked really appealing to me at a glance.
I really haven't touched very many adventure games throughout the year, but I've been interested for quite awhile. I owned Shivers growing up and really liked it, definitely couldn't get too far though since I was pretty young and clueless. If it counts, I liked the Jurassic Park game on the Sega CD as well. I own the Longest Journey, but you have to play it in a 320x240 window or stretch the screen to all hell with a widescreen monitor... so I haven't touched it, but I've always heard great things. Someday I hope... I just need to find a good LCD full screen monitor to dual screen with my PC someday.
Syberia, decent starter for adventure games?
Re: Syberia, decent starter for adventure games?
Gemini Rue is wicked.
As for classic games on GOG, I recommend Gabriel Knight 1 & 2.

You might consider the sequel to Longest Journey, which is called Dreamfall.
Maybe its silly to play the sequel first, but I played Dreamfall when it was new and had a great time with it without even knowing about the original game.
Just a thought.

I would suggest starting with Myst and then moving on to all the others mentioned.

I've tried Syberia, but I never finished it.
The Longest Journey is great - you may want to check your options either in the monitor or in your video card with regard to scaling. It's not uncommon to be able to toggle between stretching or maintaining aspect ratio.
In general it'd depend on the kind of experience you want. Myst n' the like are very, very different from SCUMM or Sierra style games. However, speaking of those, Beneath a Steel Sky is one of the titles available free on GoG (here), or actually, there are several SCUMM based games that are free now, which you can snag from the SCUMMVM site (here).
If you don't mind Steam, they've got a Lucasarts bundle for $10ish with Loom, The Dig, and two Indiana Jones games. I know the Dig and Fate of Atlantis are good. Other classics like Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max don't seem to be present :/
I'd second the Gabriel Knight games. GK2 is one of the only good FMV games I've played, though I'm not sure how well it's held up.
King's Quest and Space Quest are also good, and are available in bundle/collection form on GoG and Steam (Steam has complete bundles for $20, GoG has them in packs of 2-3 apiece). King's Quest V is probably a big one for a lot of folks - there was a version on the NES even, but it was also one of those early "rereleased to CD" type games that was bundled a lot (and VI as well).

One of the more fun (and sadly short) adventure games from back in the 90's is Full Throttle by the dude who made Psychonauts, Grim Fandango and Brutal Legend. You'll have to use the free SCUMM engine, but it works well...and is hilarious!
If you are looking for something more modern, do not skip out on the excellent Back to the Future games on PC/MAC or I played them on the iPad. They are full 3D, not too difficult and fit perfectly in with the movies. Highly recommended for Back to the Future fans!

Nice replies.
Always hear good things about Tell Tale Games, and the Back to the Future games look pretty cool.
Beneath a Steel Sky I think I tried when I grabbed it off GoG awhile back, but I didn't get very far or something. Think I got stuck. I can say I think I might be more interested right now in the "first person" styled point and click adventure games, if that makes sense. Isn't Myst like this? As in, you don't really point a character around to do things, rather you are the character with nobody onscreen, it's just kind of what "you" are seeing. So maybe that kind of style is interesting me more now... I dunno. But yeah, maybe Myst really is where I should start.
Dreamfall I definitely know about and pirated awhile back, haha. But it didn't work, I'll have to look into playing it legitimately sometime. My friends are obsessed with this one and The Longest Journey, so yeah they do sound separate enough that playing them out of order might not be a bad idea or anything.
I've definitely stumbled upon Gabriel Knight in my searches through GoG.
Space Quest interests me a good bit as well. I'm always biased for sci-fi, no denying that... anything that's mature and fantasy-ish though in this genre has my interest. Also a big fan of pre-rendered backgrounds which seem to be in a lot of these, so that's awesome and another reason why I want to play them.
So many choices, lol...
