Tactics Ogre/Ogre Battle timeline?

Post by sabrage »

I've been meaning to get into this series for ages but I have no idea where to start. Between all the re-releases and the weird way the story is set up... I really wish there was a Hardcore Gaming 101 article on it.

I understand the best version of Let Us Cling Together is the PSP one, and that The Knight of Lodis is a side-story... But a rundown of which version I should play and in what order for the others would really help me out.

I would play the original Ogre Battle on the SNES or the PS1 re-release.

Then both Ogre Battle 64 and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together are branching sequels to the original Ogre Battle.

TO: Knights of Lodis is a prequel to TO LUCT. You can appreciate it better imo if you play LUCT first but not necessary.

Be advised both TO games play similar to one another, Final Fantasy Tactics style. Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle 64 have a unique gameplay style which focuses on creating small battle units and moving them across the map in real time to secure towns and advance upon the enemy.

I would play OB: MotBQ--> OB 64 --> TO:LUCT --> TO: KoL (Ob 64 or TO LUCT can be interchangable)

You can skip the 64 one without missing story. Or you can just start with TO:LUCT if you only want to play the tactics games. There are some carryover characters and fan service that you cant really appreciate if you havent played OB: MotBQ

Are there any significant differences between the SNES and PS1 versions of MotBQ? In terms of load times, playability, and music; I know that your unique characters keep their color when you change classes in the PS1 version (oh boy!)

Or was that LUCT? I can't keep them straight.

Well both MotBQ and LUCT are on the SNES and PSX, so no wonder you're a little confused. I'm not sure about MotBQ, but I'd recommend the SNES version for TO:LUCT, no loading and all that jazz. Other than that there's practically no differences so you wouldn't be missing out on anything.

Can't wait to play the Ogre Battle games myself.

hmm well there are load times on the PS1 version that dont exist with the SNES of course. The sprites and graphics and effects look better on the PS1.

Here is a good link:

though one part is wrong, the items you get in the SNES version are random.

You can also download the SNES and N64 games on the Wii VC

only if you emulate.

Sabrage, they did make an english patched rom or repro cart.

I wouldnt play the cart version because I dont think you can suspend battles like you can in the PS1 version. So you have to go all 100 dungeon fights in a row without stopping on SNES or just leave your console on heh. I could be wrong here.

I personally like the PSP version. There are some differences, but it is a more polished experience and the translation has been updated. There are also more characters, and more individual skills, a deeper game overall. And I loved the original and rarely to I prefer a reboot or rerelease over the original.

I might just grab the ROM for MotBQ; it'd be pretty awesome to have almost the entire series on handhelds.

Well, my thought process is this: I can buy MotBQ and 64 for $70+, or I can get a Wii for the same price and buy them on VC, or I can just emulate them since that's pretty much all VC is anyways (just even more restricted :P) I generally try to avoid emulation but in a few cases I definitely consider it as an option. This is all just tentative future knowledge though - maybe when I decide to play the games I'll have the dough kicking around to get physical copies.
