I always use a stick, but for those wanting to use a pad this sounds like a great option. How much do those go for?

adapter = condom

Removes all originality...and pleasure.

...BUT, without fail, the D-pad ALWAYS starts sticking in one direction or another. I think the rubber pusher (whatever's under the directional pad) wears out really fast. I've gone through 3 of them, and while 2 still work, it's still frustrating when used for fighters. It might stick for only a half second, but it really throws off my rhythm and makes super combos extremely difficult.

I just ordered one of these:

I have a few extra Saturn pads, so it's the perfect solution for me. Can't wait to try it out.
I've found the same exact issue with those pads. :( Owned several and they all inevitably wear out like you've described. Only thing I've tried is cleaning them, doesn't seem to help. It would be nice if there were (improved) replacement rubber pads for those.

hey its your choice pay $100 getting an official sega saturn ps2 controller or getting someone to mod one for you or just pay about $20-$30 for an adapter and use the real thing. the regular ps2 controller has the worst dpad for fighters ever imo, but its all personal preference. i personally use an adapter for the dreamcast that lets me use an xbox controller since its much more comfortable to me and the button layout is very similar

Some adapters enhance pleasure,...just sayin'.

And as far as "originality", a lot of fighters are ports anyways. A purist is going to use a stick.

But NOTHING beats a Saturn controller (model 2) when it comes to D-pad design.

Thank you! It seems like people either like them or think they suck, but no one ever seems to mention their durability. I thought I was delusional or something.

The ebay link I posted is around $40 (or a few bucks less if you win the auction) for the adapter. I don't know how many that guy has, but he seems to always have one up for that past few weeks.

Purists don't use sticks to play ports, they play on cabs.

This thread is about pads. More precisely, PS1/PS2 pads, i'm pretty sure there are enough threads expressing the boner-worthiness of the SAT pad.

Fair enough. But I'm sure it's the next best thing for purists who don't have the room and $$$ for an Arcade of each game they like. Some like to practice at home too. Why else is there a market for good arcade sticks.
(maybe "purists" is even the wrong word, but I hope you get what I'm saying; thought it was self-explanatory. In any case, I agree that this is a pad discussion, and thus besides the point).

The PS2 had that Darkstalkers Sega pad, as was already mentioned. And given that it's, for all intents and purposes, a Saturn controller, I find it completely relevant.
The adapters are a nice (and usually more affordable) alternative to that route.

yeah I guess I'm not much of purist because I've never been good at playing fighters with a stick. Funny. I can't play shmups without a stick. But for fighters, I need a good fight pad. I never owned a Saturn. Never touched a Saturn pad. I assume it's about the size of the Genesis 6-button pad though? I'm sure they're nice, but they look a little small for my hands (remember, I pointed out that the SF2 anniversary pad felt a bit too small to me, which is why I love the SF4 pad). Though admittedly, I'd kill for a boxed Darkstalkers PS2 pad just to display haha.

The Saturn pad is a little larger and easily more comfortable. At least more comfortable for me.

I am interested in a PS1/2 or PS3 fight pad as well. For my friends. For some reason none of my friends ever want to use the arcade sticks, ever...
