Star Fox would be more impressive if it didn't have an enhancement chip. I find DKC impressive, though not because of the prerendered ACM graphics, but because I can't figure out how they fit all of those smoothly animated characters in the PPU's 16-kb of sprite patterns, without running into v-blank issues from DMA bandwidth overload. Did they write a different v-blank routine for every single possible combination of enemies?Gamerforlife wrote:I've only ever played Starfox and Starfox 64, both of which I often said were among my favorite games of all time. Having played Starfox 64 recently on the 3DS, I realized it's not as great as I remember it being. I played the original again afterwards and the differences are significant
Starfox has a better soundtrack. It's epic and militaristic. Starfox 64's music sound like generic Nintendo music and the sound quality isn't as high. The original Starfox's music conveys the sense of a real war happening, with you at the forefront of the army
Starfox has better voice acting. Starfox 64 may have more voice acting, but it's all bad. Starfox has just a few voice samples, but they all sound good and add to the game
Starfox has very carefully laid out level design. Every enemy is placed or appears in a specific location for a reason. Starfox 64's levels just feel like a convoluted mess where they just try to cram as many enemies into a level as possible with no real thought
Starfox has a simple score system where you're tasked to shoot every enemy in a level. Starfox 64 has a points system where you need to kill a certain number of enemies in a level to get a medal. However, given the more convoluted and chaotic nature of Starfox 64's design, trying to hit every enemy can get frustrating when there always seems to be about fifty different enemies coming at you at once. Plus, the medal system seems to rely heavily on playing using charged, unlocked shots, which are very awkward and annoying to use
Starfox doesn't have shitty levels that require you to use other vehicles besides the Arwing. Starfox 64 does(like that garbage underwater level)
Starfox was a revolutionary game for its time. The graphics in particular were amazing. This game and Donkey Kong Country got people talking about what the SNES was capable of. You could argue Starfox 64 looks better, but the original Starfox's graphics are much more impressive even today when you consider the hardware it was on. The heavy use of polygons gives the game a more unique aesthetic than Starfox 64, even it was simply due to hardware limitations
Starfox had a bit more of a serious tone. Starfox 64 just seems like a joke with it's laughable voice acting and corny dialog. There's a serious feel to the original Starfox's soundtrack and the little voice acting there is has a more serious tone to it
I can't quite give a specific reason why, but Starfox just has a classier vibe to it than Starfox 64. Again, there is just so much corniness to Starfox 64. The bosses all feel like something out of a silly kid's cartoon. Many of the bosses in the original Starfox just had a more imposing presence to them. I think the lack of bad dialog and silly voice acting has a lot to do with that. Instead, you were just left with the music to listen to, and it always made every boss fight seem epic or special in some way

I played Star Fox 64 more growing up, so I'm probably biased, but I find the framerate of the original Star Fox to be too choppy. Great game, it just hasn't aged too well technically. On the other hand, Star Fox 2 plays beautifully. Its super-smooth and has very intense, claustrophobic action. It may be my favorite, actually.

Starfox 64 is awesome. I sat down and finished that game one night without even meaning to, it sucked me in that's for sure.

The old canon was better overall. SF and SF2 are the best games in the series, and the NP comic was awesome (from what I hear, I have yet to read it).
Re: SNES Star Fox
The music in the first game is legendary. I don't remember any of the music from the N64 game.

Amazing how well some 16-bit soundtracks hold up. Streets of Rage, Streets of Rage 2, Starfox, Mega Man X, the Sonic games and TMNT:Turtles in Time(compared to the crappy one in Re-Shelled)Zing wrote:The music in the first game is legendary. I don't remember any of the music from the N64 game.

That and Star Wolf (along with the main theme remixes) are the only good parts of the soundtrack. Compare that to the original main theme, Corneria, Meteor, Macbeth, Titania, the various boss songs (most notably the Corneria one), and more.sabrage wrote:You can't be serious! That said I still think 64 had decent music. Just can't compare anything to the original ... like I said in the last page I so wish that guy did more, or they did more with those samples or whatever. But its uniqueness makes it that much more awesome.
Also can't forget how INTENSE, haunting, and dreadful the opening was. It's beyond perfection to include this in the final area before Andross.
The ending escape sequences in 64 was freaking amazing though, that was so epic.
I remember always doing the second route as a kid, just to hear Venom Base 2.

I LOVE that track! Always was one of my favorites! I also loved the track playing at the end of the game when they were showing you all the enemies you'd faced. If I could find it I'd post a youtube link
