SNES Star Fox

Post by scarper »

After beating the first set of levels, I had the most intense feeling of holy-shit-victory in a long time. Definitely feels more challenging and rewarding than all the other Star Fox games. But this is exactly where I'm troubled.

I mean, 64 and Assault both give very pleasant gameplay experiences, but this was just mind blowing. I think I feel that this is the best of every Star Fox title. It's just waaay more challenging and funner to play imo. That whole edgy feeling given by the dark ages of polygon graphics kind of enhanced the experience, especially when you could tell the developers ran with the whole idea, getting interesting camera angles and the pretty scenery.

Help me Racket people. I feel like I'm being really silly for thinking SNES Star Fox is the best Star Fox.

Nah dude, SNES is my favorite as well. Although 64 was damn good too, I never bothered with Assault.

At the time though when it was brand new, I'd say Star Fox was one of the most insane gaming experiences I had as a kid next to Donkey Kong Country or something (the graphics!), Star Fox was just crazy and so unique. The OST remains to be one of the best out there easily as well I'd say, it's a shame that guy barely did anything else. Nothing else quite like it.

In regards to your rewarding experience though, I'd definitely say the game feels a bit like a shmup in that regard. It's shorter than 64 and kind of more arcadey, lots of trial and error runs I'm sure, and yeah. If you thought clearing the first few stages was awesome, wait until you can conquer the second and third paths. I think even when I mastered the game, the third path was still insanely brutal and one slip up would be a game over pretty much. Just like a lot of shmups, you had to have your laser upgraded to deal with the bosses or you were screwed. lol

I also tend to think I like F-Zero more than X as well, but both were incredible.

Yeaah, I'm not feeling it.

I admit to never having played Command, but excepting that, I think the original Starfox is the worst of the lot. Not saying its bad, but aside from the obvious technical achievement I've never been impressed with it.

To me Starfox 64 is just plain better in every possible way. And that even with having to listen to Slippy talk.

I also love Adventures, while we're at it. Flake mentioned recently that he never understood the hate that game gets, and I agree with him.

I also liked Assault quite a bit. The on foot and tank levels were average at best, and kinda felt like padding, but the actual flying levels were fantastic, and I wish there were more of them.

And here we are with the Wii, which feels like it was built for the Starfox series and nope... it just makes TOO much sense I guess!

I've only ever played Starfox and Starfox 64, both of which I often said were among my favorite games of all time. Having played Starfox 64 recently on the 3DS, I realized it's not as great as I remember it being. I played the original again afterwards and the differences are significant

Starfox has a better soundtrack. It's epic and militaristic. Starfox 64's music sound like generic Nintendo music and the sound quality isn't as high. The original Starfox's music conveys the sense of a real war happening, with you at the forefront of the army

Starfox has better voice acting. Starfox 64 may have more voice acting, but it's all bad. Starfox has just a few voice samples, but they all sound good and add to the game

Starfox has very carefully laid out level design. Every enemy is placed or appears in a specific location for a reason. Starfox 64's levels just feel like a convoluted mess where they just try to cram as many enemies into a level as possible with no real thought

Starfox has a simple score system where you're tasked to shoot every enemy in a level. Starfox 64 has a points system where you need to kill a certain number of enemies in a level to get a medal. However, given the more convoluted and chaotic nature of Starfox 64's design, trying to hit every enemy can get frustrating when there always seems to be about fifty different enemies coming at you at once. Plus, the medal system seems to rely heavily on playing using charged, unlocked shots, which are very awkward and annoying to use

Starfox doesn't have shitty levels that require you to use other vehicles besides the Arwing. Starfox 64 does(like that garbage underwater level)

Starfox was a revolutionary game for its time. The graphics in particular were amazing. This game and Donkey Kong Country got people talking about what the SNES was capable of. You could argue Starfox 64 looks better, but the original Starfox's graphics are much more impressive even today when you consider the hardware it was on. The heavy use of polygons gives the game a more unique aesthetic than Starfox 64, even it was simply due to hardware limitations

Starfox had a bit more of a serious tone. Starfox 64 just seems like a joke with it's laughable voice acting and corny dialog. There's a serious feel to the original Starfox's soundtrack and the little voice acting there is has a more serious tone to it

I can't quite give a specific reason why, but Starfox just has a classier vibe to it than Starfox 64. Again, there is just so much corniness to Starfox 64. The bosses all feel like something out of a silly kid's cartoon. Many of the bosses in the original Starfox just had a more imposing presence to them. I think the lack of bad dialog and silly voice acting has a lot to do with that. Instead, you were just left with the music to listen to, and it always made every boss fight seem epic or special in some way

Hey Gamerforlife, your post really makes me want to play this game. I only ever played Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64) since I went from the Mega Drive to the 64. Lylat wars seemed amazing when it came out but now looks and feels pretty vapid, which is probably why I never bothered seeking out Star Fox SNES.

But if Nintendo did that, it would please too many fans!! Totally going against their code of conduct.

Gamerforlife, you hit the nail right on the head. Star Fox 64 just felt more corny and kid oriented, which to me, offers a different experience, but not an entirely bad one. Kinda makes it feel like a semi-decent Disney film. Gameplay is solid. But SNES Star Fox... (See above big post.)

I definitely like Star Fox 64 over the original. It just feels like a smoother game. And the added elements are great (all-range mode, team Star Wolf, tank, sub). It still had the three difficulty paths, and you were able to jump between them. Pretty much each level had 2 exits. Oh yeah, and it introduced the motha fucking RUMBLE PAK !

This is what happened for most people: Star Fox came out for the SNES and it was absolutely mind blowing. Then Star Fox 64 came out and it was absolutely fucking insane. Then the Gamecube came out, and we all heard that we're getting a game called "Star Fox Adventures" and the general thought was, "Star Fox was amazing, Star Fox 64 was that x10, I can't wait for the new one!" Of course, not realizing that the sub title "Adventure" actually had to do with the game genre. When the game finally came out, I definitely remember being let down. It is a good game, but this is where the hate for it comes from.

Assault didn't do much to cheer anyone up, that game was mediocre at best. I kinda liked what they were trying to do with the on-foot levels, but I really wish they would have just replaced those levels with flying levels.

But yes, I've been wondering for a while now... Why no Star Fox Wii game? I have an idea. Nintendo can't get motion controls implemented in their new Star Fox game just right, so it's a stalling project. Hey, I have an idea. Drop the stupid retarded motion controls and just give us a kick ass Star Fox game!

I am trying not to imagine a modern Star Fox game with a several hours long "tutorial", too much dialogue, and a "game guide" to play through the levels for you if you die too many times.

I prefer the original as well. There were some nice additions to SF64, but I think the gameplay in the original is just tighter overall.
