Extremely loud 80gb ps3

Post by Onyxthecat »

Ok, so I just picked a backwards compatible ps3 from gamestop and after setting everything up the fan runs extremely loud in just idle. I have read that this is impending YLOD but this has been refurbished. Maybe its how hot my house is as I live on the first floor and the owner has no concept of using heat properly in the winter. I have a 30 day warranty with GS but WTF do I have to have such a loud system. It jumps 3 stages of fan speed just starting and going into XMB.

Maybe you could put it outside with an extension cord (so it's cold) and see if it's still loud? That will tell you if it's heat related or something else.

Just return it. Probably not worth the time.

Yeah buying any modern console "refurbished" is generally not the best idea.

They do run loud in general though. It was one reason I got a Slim to put in the living room. I don't think it should be quite that bad just idling, but even stuff like playing Blu-rays will tend to get the fan going.

My slim can get pretty loud too, but the fat PS3 I used to have was like having a jet engine in my room. Worked fine for most games, but it was extremely distracting for movies.

my 60gb is pretty decently loud, though really no louder than, say, having a computer in your living room.

In any case, it's pretty easy to ignore for me.

Depends on the computer. My laptop plugged into my TV is very quiet while playing doujin games and movies. A bit louder for games like Skyrim but still only maybe 1/3 as loud as a fat PS3, in my experience. :P
