I know only one girl that was homeschooled, and she is one of the smartest people I've ever personally met. I like the idea of it, and I personally would have loved to gone through it, but it would not work out for me. Her mom doesn't work, and she learned so quickly. She skipped at least two grades. She actually went to high school, and they wanted to bump her up a grade every year, but she never wanted to do it, she wanted a high school experience.

Sorry, I felt the need to tell my story.

I used to be homeschooled. When I went back to school, I was still getting As. Stereotypes are invalid.

I know a girl who used to be homeschooled, but switched to public schooling for high school. She says public school is actually easier.

I am sure that it can be a nice thing to have someone teach you who cares about you, but I am quite skeptical of educational experiences where you learn only through independent study and/or only receive high quality instruction in one or two areas of specialty. All the research guidance and personal care in the world can't substitute for actual expertise, can't provide meaningful experiences in group learning, and can't surpass what you'll find in the best classrooms.

Of course if your school district is really shitty I have more sympathy for parents who pull their kids out, but I also think that their time would be better spent making money to send their kid to a private school than to play teacher at home.
The lack of social pressure is a huge plus as well.
Because we were in the middle of a move, I did 6 months of homeschooling in 5th grade, and that was more than enough for me. I missed the socializing and, in retrospect, even the awkward/hurtful stuff that I faced from time to time ended up making me a better person at adapting to a wide range of social situations (something I've witnessed in very few homeschooled people).

I was pulled out of school and home-schooled for awhile, but I was given lessons by teachers, not my parents. I quite liked it actually. I found that getting one-on-one lessons was far more beneficial to me than a large classroom environment. The teachers seemed to be fine with it as well, and were much more laid back and willing to chat. When I was put back in public school I was pretty bummed.

From what I (think) I know, that seems unusual for homeschooling...is it? Individual tutoring in every subject by a qualified instructor is a pretty sweet way to learn, but I didn't think homeschoolers traditionally received this....do they?

No, that's not typical. Usually the parents do it all, and frequently, only the mother at that.

On a different topic, Santorum is really cleaning house tonight.

I'm not sure how it normally works, but I'll explain what happened in my case. I had already finished the first quarter of the year so I already had teachers. I wasn't pulled out by choice or request but due to illness (I was in 11th grade). Teachers weren't required to tutor but could opt to, to my surprise three of them did, I guess I was lucky and had good teachers. For the rest of the subjects I just had to do study them myself and turn in work. I was surprised by how sweet of a setup it was too.

In online school, we have weekly hour and a half "live sessions" with teachers which is basically like a teaching livestream.
