Non-Gamers Say The Darndest Things

One thing I notice between younger gamers and older gamers is the term for a game's stage. I (age 25) say "Level". My brother in-law (age 33) says "Board".

Yeah I don't get this. Where does "Board" come from? I'm 33 and I wouldn't call it anything but level or stage.

From board games like Monopoly, I guess.

It's the term used for arcade games back in the day. If you read about Donkey Kong or Pac Man you will see each stage called "a board" and lives called "men" or "ships".

Levels are a more modern term, probably from the NES days. Other than Gauntlet, which has a thematic reason for it, I don't think any 80s arcade game had levels.

EDIT: Also interesting, I use to play an unhealthy level of Atari games back in the day and I don't remember any "boards" stuff there either.

I used to know a kid that never "beat" his games... no, he conquered them. I used to strike up a conversation with him just because I found it hilarious.

I'm sure a few arcade games used Level in the 80s, but it was not used as much. Many 80s arcade games used Stage (Space Harrier), Wave (Nibbler), Mission (Shinobi), and Round (Exed Exes -- how bout that!)

Yeah I've seen that one as well, they can go to hell though. The thing that gets me about those sales is that it kind of makes we want to buy it just to save the box from the bin

Sunday I was playing Rayman Origins and was trying to get a lum that required precise platforming and every time I would miss and fall to my death she would say "You missed it!"
