It's the term used for arcade games back in the day. If you read about Donkey Kong or Pac Man you will see each stage called "a board" and lives called "men" or "ships".Stark wrote:Yeah I don't get this. Where does "Board" come from? I'm 33 and I wouldn't call it anything but level or stage.
Levels are a more modern term, probably from the NES days. Other than Gauntlet, which has a thematic reason for it, I don't think any 80s arcade game had levels.

Interesting. Learn something new every day.
EDIT: Also interesting, I use to play an unhealthy level of Atari games back in the day and I don't remember any "boards" stuff there either.

I used to know a kid that never "beat" his games... no, he conquered them. I used to strike up a conversation with him just because I found it hilarious.
"Hey man, you ever play Dragon Warrior?"
"Oh yeah, I conquered that game last year."

I see quite a few ebay sales that go along the lines of - 'console for sale, mint in box with manual. Will throw box away to save postage if you like?'
What kind of cretin would throw a box away?

The same cretins who threw away all those NES/SNES/N64 boxes.Curlypaul wrote:I see quite a few ebay sales that go along the lines of - 'console for sale, mint in box with manual. Will throw box away to save postage if you like?'

I'm sure a few arcade games used Level in the 80s, but it was not used as much. Many 80s arcade games used Stage (Space Harrier), Wave (Nibbler), Mission (Shinobi), and Round (Exed Exes -- how bout that!)General_Norris wrote:Other than Gauntlet, which has a thematic reason for it, I don't think any 80s arcade game had levels.

I've also seen ones where people have it pictured like you're getting a game CIB but in the description it says they'll throw in the box if you give them more money for shipping. Now that's bullshit, set you're price and go with it, don't be a douche.Curlypaul wrote:I see quite a few ebay sales that go along the lines of - 'console for sale, mint in box with manual. Yeah I've seen that one as well, they can go to hell though. The thing that gets me about those sales is that it kind of makes we want to buy it just to save the box from the binharper wrote:I've also seen ones where people have it pictured like you're getting a game CIB but in the description it says they'll throw in the box if you give them more money for shipping. My wife likes to point out when I die by saying "You died!" or something along those lines.
Sunday I was playing Rayman Origins and was trying to get a lum that required precise platforming and every time I would miss and fall to my death she would say "You missed it!"
I do love the woman, but like the title says "non-gamers say the darndest things."
