What do games do you consider must play?
Ok so the topic title is very poorly worded. Much like how most people have lists of books or movies to read/watch at some point in the future, I thought making a similar list of games could be beneficial to people who do not keep up with everything. Since this is a retro site, I would like to ask for mostly retro titles, but new ones are ok aswell. Non-mainstream would be preferred, since if you go to a ranking site those are usually the only ones youll find. Also please dont just post links to rackets hidden gems and games that defined, I was looking for alittle more variety to add to those.
This came from a conversation I had with a cousin where she was asking if I had some books she wants to read, then she asked if I could suggest a good game. I thought, hell I should just get some help and make a list.
So to go back to my poorly worded phrase: what games do you consider must play?

Must-play? Well... I'd say it needs to be broken down by genre in order for it to be possible for someone to find a must-play game for themselves.
That said, I'm on a shooter streak right now so I'll say: Lords of Thunder, Blazing Lazers, Space Megaforce, Radiant Silvergun, and Guwange.
Run'n'gun: Gunstar Heroes, Contra III, and Metal Slug X. (I'm rather tired... I'll probably edit later as more memorable ones come to mind)

Let's see. This list is entirely based on my own personal opinions of course. There are a lot of BIG name titles left out. These are simply games I think everyone should play.
Genesis:
Cannon Fodder
General Chaos
Gunstar Heroes
Landstalker
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
32X:
Kunckles Chaotix
Sega CD:
Flashback (Genesis/SNES/PC version works too--and this game needs to be remade for SOMETHING)
Popful Mail
Sega Saturn:
Burning Rangers
Dark Savior
Diehard Arcade
Dragon Force
Guardian Heroes (play this if you play no other game on this list)
Legend of Oasis
Metal Slug
Nights
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Princess Crown
Radiant SIlvergun
Return Fire (also on 3DO/PS1/PC)
Shining Force 3 (All 3 scenerios)
Skeleton Warriors (for the music if nothing else)
Three Dirty Dwarves
Dreamcast:
Armada
Chu Chu Rocket
Culdcept II (also on PS2 and a newer version on the 360. the original on the saturn is good but limited)
Dynamite Cop
Ikaruga (also on 360/GC)
Jet Grind Radio (Also on XBOX and a handheld version on the GBA)
Ooga Booga
Power Stone 2
Rez (On PS2 as well, I believe)
Samba De Amigo (Remade for the Wii as well?)
Wacky Races
NGPC:
Card Fighters Clash
Dark Arms
Faselei!
Metal Slug first and second mission
Rockman Battle and FIghters
SNK vs. Capcom MotM (in my opinion the best fighter on any handheld, still)
GBA:
Gunstar Super Heroes
Mario Tennis: Power Tour
Mother 3 (english fan translation in progress)
Rebelstar
River City Ransom
Shining Force
Shining Soul 2
Sonic Battle
Tatics Ogre
DS:
Animal Crossing
Contact
Glroy Days DS
New Super Mario Bros.
Rune Factory
Yoshi Touch and Go
PSP:
Disgaea (also on PS2 and coming to the DS)
FF Tactics (also on PS1)
Generation of Chaos (the first is better in my opinion)
Killzone: Liberation
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Monster Hunter Freedom 2
Patapon
PC:
Any of the Cultures series
Settlers 2
Dungeon Keeper 2
The Guild 2 and/or Europa 1400: The Guild
Pirates! (available on PSP, Xbox)
Quest For Glory 1-4 (5 isn't bad and you'll probably want to play it after these)
X-Com and X-Com Terror From the Deep
If you can find a free server or make your own, Ultima Online
I know that's a big list and I could narrow it down further if pressed, but should be a starting point for mine anyway.

An interesting idea, let us see if I can be of service:
NES:
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
Contra/Super C
Double Dragon Trilogy
Lifeforce
Megadrive/Genesis:
Tatsujin/Truxton
Ristar
Comix Zone
Micro Machines Military
Rock N Roll Racing
Not much of an help I am afraid. However I agree with Mr. D.D.D. for your to recieve better submissions you may need to break down the question to genres or systems.

hmm ill do one game for a genre, not all genres but a few:
platformers: Spyro the Dragon - PSOne
racing: Gran Turismo 5 Prolouge - Playstation 3
shooter: Doom or Doom 3 RoE -PC or Xbox
puzzle: Lumines -Playstation Portable
other: Ape Escape: On the Loose/ Ape Escape - Playstation Portable/ PSOne

Older. Not wiser.
Here's my offerings, I tried to avoid any too well known games, but there are a few exceptions;
Action; Metal Slug, Guardian Heroes, Comix Zone, Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow of Mystara/Tower of Doom, The Punisher, Assault Suit Leynos 2
Adventure; Loom, Simon the Sorcerer I & II, Discworld I, II & Noir, Beneath a Steel Sky, Wrath of the Gods, Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari
FPS; Rise of the Triad
Platformers; World of Illusion, Tryrush Deppy, Ristar, Rayman
RPG; Valkyrie Profile, Tales of Phantasia, SaGa Frontier II, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
SHMUP; Soukyugurentai, Battle Garegga, Cotton Boomerang, Blast Wind
SRPG; Langrisser series, Dragon Force, Terra Phantastica, Wachenroder

I guess I'll arrange my list by console.
Sega Saturn:
Burning Rangers
D
Deep Fear
Nights
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Virtua Cop
Nintendo 64:
Blast Corps
Harvest Moon 64
Mace: The Dark Age
Mario 64
Ogre Battle 64
Quest 64
Sin and Punishment
Wetrix
Playstation:
Bloody Roar
Echo Night
Echo Night 2
Einhander
Guilty Gear
Hell Knight
Koudelka
Koukai Sarena Katta Shuki: The Note
Overblood
Overblood 2
Parasite Eve 2
Pocket Fighter
Rival Schools
Silent Hill
Soul Edge
Tobal No. 1
Dreamcast:
Blue Stinger
D2
Illbleed
Jet Grind Radio
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Nanatsu no Hikan: Senritsu no Bishou
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Shenmue
The Last Blade 2
Vampire Chronicles
I've never owned a Sega console, so I never got the chance to experience what so many considered so awesome. But now I'm finding games that I really want to play(and this list hardly includes the titles I've already played that I want to get my hands on again, like X-Men vs. Street Fighter). Also I didn't give the N64 enough credit while it was out, so I think I should go back and look at it again, see what all I missed on this underrated console.
As for the Playstation, well...of all the titles I picked up for my PSX, about three fourths are RPGs. I really gotta branch out. Into survival horror more than anything. Go figure.

I'm going to have to think about this, like has been said before there are just so many games out there, I think I may just list a Top Ten or something like that since I'm feeling lazy.
1. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1)
2. Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)
3. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
4. Civilization 2 (PC)
5. Romance of the Three Kingdoms 7 (PS1)
6. NHL Hockey '94 (Genesis, best sports game ever.)
7. Final Fantasy II (SNES)
8. Raiden Trad (Genesis)
9. Mario Kart (SNES)
10. Worms (Multi-Player it doesn't get any better.)
